a drum could refer to a drum of whiskey or rum (or hell, the phrase "for a drum" could even be "for red rum") with drumsticks meaning chicken drumsticks.

as NYKnicksfan11 pointed out--there's ambiguity as to who drove whom. so let's say the man with the dollar pays the streetcar driver for the right to drive the streetcar.

so basically, some guy gets hammered at lunch then rents a streetcar and gets 10 blocks before they realize he's too drunk to drive and kick him out.

This doesn't really explain the hint in a very satisfying way but i think it works well for the rest of it.

Maybe?

Ha...I tried that route of thinking, but that wasn't it. My friend said that the family member who knows it said once you get the right answer, you just know it, because it fits everything so perfectly.

I think you're on to something here.

He gives the driver a dime and THEY kick him out after 10 blocks. There is only one driver mentioned. That has to be at least one of the pieces.

I was seeing if there was a marching band tune called "the riddle" that could potentially offend but no dice.

Does this have anything to do with it maybe?

In the riddle he sayd he spend 80 CENTS on a drum...and ten CENTS on the sticks

but he gave the driver a DIME...He didnt give him ten CENTS...

Am i looking to far into it?

why didnt he spend a dime on 2 sticks? or why didnt he give the driver 10 cents?

i think im onto something? or no? lol im going nuts

yeah I actually thought about that too and thought of 3 slang meanings for dime:

1. dime piece- he gave the driver a woman to drive him somewhere and they decided to kick him out ha.
2. dropping a dime- he gave the driver some info I dunno
3. dime bag- I don't think they used that term back then.

....

anyway what I also thought of was that the guy bought the drums to be part of a parade or funeral procession. he gets kicked out after 10 blocks because either the street is closed off due to the parade/funeral procession or because it has already started and has advanced 3 blocks by the time he gets there.

There has to be some connection between the 10 cents and the 10th block...

OR since the riddle doesn't tell you the sequence, maybe he first paid the driver 10 cents then was kicked out after 10 blocks in order to buy the drums and drumsticks.

That's what I'm thinking-couldn't have food or alcohol on the streetcar. It's settled for me.

No, that's not it. Why would he get "kicked off" for that?

I got it. There's a streetcar driver and then there's the conductor. You don't pay the driver, you pay the conductor. That is why it's "they" kicked him out, instead of "he."

ok... this doesn't look like a np-complete problem. Nothing like the seven bridges of Königsberg or the travelling salesman or something like that.

It also could be a linguistic riddle, with some double meaning somewhere. That would be lame, but can't rule it out. The fact that it says "dime" instead of using "X cents" like it did before may be a hint in that direction... if it's impossible to rephrase the riddle it's one of these, but I don't think so.

It's more likely a test in abductive logic, like that famous Pyramid riddle. That would mean, assuming that every information is substantial, to gather everything said in the riddle and search for an explanation that covers all of it. Thus, the answer has to include the drum and the sticks, the money, the driver, the blocks, the car, the man, "they" and every other factor I might have overlooked.

I can't make much sense of it right now, especially with the hint. Does that mean that the answer is part of the riddle or that "the riddle" is part of the answer?
