A sobering look at the correlation of age to production (PER) in the NBA.
Our roster is about 2 years younger than the league average, but not tracking to the overall league PER distribution (hence reflected in our record). The data really does point to the need to either keep accumulating opportunities to draft younger players and to go after players (in FA or trade) with higher PERs but in that mid-20s age range (yes, Randle had a 21 PER at age 24 so obviously not a perfect science).

This is the data science that proves "Knick GM's past, you were dumb asses for trading so many of our first round picks"

Some news came up in Minnesota that I thought Knicks fans might be interested in.

The Wolves best local reporter, Jon Krascinki of the Athletic, was surprised by Malik Beasley’s contract (4 for $60, final season a team option), considering his legal issues and the additions of Rubio and Anthony Edwards, and did some digging. Supposedly the Knicks told him that he was their #2 priority in free agency, and if they didn’t get Gordon Hayward, they’d have a big offer waiting for him.. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but Rosas refused to play hardball with Beas, and signed him on Day One to the deal.

I personally wanted to add that if this is true, I could certainly see the Knicks being able to trade for Malik on the cheap, later this season when he becomes eligible. MIN certainly is overstocked in guards (Russell, Rubio, Beasley, and their 2018, 2019, and 2020 picks) and will struggle to find the minutes to invest. In addition, part of the reason MIN gave up a late 1st at the deadline was to get Beasley’s Bird rights, so he could add a higher level of matching salary for future trades. And Rosas likes to deal.

Anyway, I didn’t know if you guys had heard this, so I thought I’d take the time to bring it over to you. Good luck this season.

As someone who would be happy if they got Buddy without giving up draft capital, I can get down with your perspective. He's certainly got flaws and hasn't been part of winning - for these reasons I have no problem leaving him in SAC and pursuing alternative routes; he's not a must have or anything to me. I think my personal pushback on the dismissal of Hield though is the idea that he's "just a shooter" as a pejorative, or that you can find dudes like him at the back end of a weak draft (Nesmith).

Hield is a pretty incredible VOLUME shooter when comparing him to everyone else in the NBA. These are the top 15 guys in the league in terms of 3PA per game last year (the only 15 to average at least eight 3PA a game), and what they shot:



Hield had the 5th most 3PA per game in the NBA last season, and among the highest volume shooters had the 4th best 3P% behind only Duncan Robinson, Bertans, and Dame. The man is another level of shooter beyond the "just a shooter" dismissal in my opinion.

Welll he is pretty much "just a shooter" but like Bertans and Robinson he' damn good in that one aspect. But as you know,those guys don't have have the foundation piece versatility of Dame.

So IMO its about priorities. Do you sacrifice some of that draft potential to get that foundation piece in the short term for that damn good one dimensional shooter- who really doesn't fit your timeline -Heild is like 27?

A 27 year old shooter will only be 31 in 4 years. How long do you plan on playing for the top pick?

On the flip side of what you say (and I don't even disagree with you): Unlike Hield, our franchise player currently doesn't have a single standout skill. He looks a lot like Andre Iguodala to me - without the athleticism and defensive upside though.

Fair point on Buddy...I'll retract the age comment because you're right 27 isn't really old. I think Rj's floor and a team not built with him in mind could be like Iguodala...

I'd say his standout quality is his bull like strength around the basket.but yeah I think RJ is a competitor who can and will shore up his shooting or or weaknesses. He he's not "Lebron", but I absolutely think he could be a "Jimmy Butler".. .....and when you have an influx of young talent, like OBI, like Quickley , like whoever we get in the next uber deep draft....he it kind of relieved some of that burden to be nega super duper Lebron level stud .

Obi Toppin sets conditioning test record in Knicks rookie harbinger.

They say the NBA season — even a shortened 72-game campaign — is a marathon. Let’s hope Obi Toppin’s record-setting conditioning pays off in his rookie season.

Toppin, the eighth pick in the draft last month, revealed he scored the highest in the franchise’s conditioning test, which is believed to consist of mostly running drills.

“I feel like with my athletic ability, my speed, the way I move my body, I understand my body, and I understand the things I need to do to get better and to take my game to another level so I’m locked in,’’ Toppin said. “I’m at another level, I’m not in college anymore, and I’m locked into what I have to do to be great.”

Not surprised. Kid is in excellent shape. He looks like has very little body fat.

I'm sure Obi works his ass off but he may just have that kind of metabolism that produces those red blood cells that deliver oxygen to the body at a greater rate. I'm just thinking about how some MMA fighters have great gas tanks and others gas out quickly. With Colby Covington, for example, the dude can go five UFC championship rounds in his sleep. It's crazy.
