thats not how it works. Once you start FA, you either declare yourself as an under the cap team or over the cap team. Your exceptions are based of that. Not how you spend your $$$

How much can they actually spend though? Whats the number, and best case scenario who can we sign and for how much? We wouldn't have enough for both Jordan and Aldrige right?

Right now we can spend approx 27 million.

Once we spend that. We can go over the cap by 3 million on a player by using our "room" exception.

So really we have approx 30 million to spend but that extra 3 million can not be inclusive of the 27 million. It has to be spend separately

one great thing we potentially have in our favor however is our trade exceptions

we can use those to acquire players even after we go over the cap

Did Stein just sort of implicitly report that we are going to meet with LMA?

No, that isn't how it works.

Trade exceptions count against the cap. In order to convert that cap space to free cap space with which you can sign free agents with, you have to renounce them.

Knicks do NOT get $27m in cap space AND existing trade exceptions.

The trade exceptions will disappear when we go below the cap.

Don't you have to waive them for the cap space? You can't have both

Probably because what he brings is not a priority. He also is seeking his full max of $15.5MM (same as Greg Monroe) which I can't see NYK even remotely considering since he basically has the same "type" of game as Melo.

To be 100% clear so as to illustrate how they work, they don't disappear. A team must proactively renouce them in order to get under the cap.

Along with th free agent amounts of EVERY player who ended the season on your roster. Even if you don't plan in resigning them, the space doesn't appear on July 1. You have to submit paperwork to the league renouncing every cap hold.

thats not true either. Once we declare as a team with cap space, we have to renounce our trade exceptions.
