The trade exceptions will disappear when we go below the cap.

To be 100% clear so as to illustrate how they work, they don't disappear. A team must proactively renouce them in order to get under the cap.

Along with th free agent amounts of EVERY player who ended the season on your roster. Even if you don't plan in resigning them, the space doesn't appear on July 1. You have to submit paperwork to the league renouncing every cap hold.

Correcto.

But in effect if you want cap room, then poof go the trade exceptions.

Right now we can spend approx 27 million.

Once we spend that. We can go over the cap by 3 million on a player by using our "room" exception.

So really we have approx 30 million to spend but that extra 3 million can not be inclusive of the 27 million. It has to be spend separately

What if we waive Calderon then how much would we have?

I think waiving calderon is out of the question. It doesn't make sense because we would be paying calderon for 5 or 6 more years. So stretching him doesn't make sense when we could use a veteran knock down shooter. The 3 million or so we save from stretching him really isn't going to net us anything worth it.

I agree the stretch doesn't seem to make sense in this scenario, especially since we are thin on actual NBA talent.

But in the pipe dream scenario where we need the space to sign two max guys, (Gasol & Dragic is my hope), or we sign multiple 2nd tier guys, then we have to sacrifice him to the Philly pit of unwanted contracts.

What exactly is your definition of "FUN"?

I know that for me... this isn't it.

So you want to trade Melo for what's essentially an expring contract?

Are you mad?

Talk about giving away an asset for almost nothing.

I wouldn't hate it in the sense that I don't love Melo, Johnson would help us win a few games next year so our lost pick wouldn't hurt as much and we'd free up that cap space to do a real rebuild.

I don't like it in that Melo is going to age well and I think will be a decent contract once the cap goes up. Also, because we gave up so much for him and the Nets don't have anything else to throw in.

So you will get lambasted for posting this but it's not that terrible of an idea.

Average Joe Johnson.

Watch the Grizzlies give them draft picks for this scrub.

I wouldn't do it either, but I'd have thought there would be some takers for approximating (not matching) Melo's production this year and going into the Durant/Horford/Conley FA year with $40m in cap room.

If we are trading Melo, we need to get picks/young players. Def not Joe Johnson.

I'd give it a year and if things aren't working there should be a lot of suitors for Melo in 2016.

By asking a question? In which I answer in the negative?

I'm not really seeking credibility with anyone who doesn't understand what a question is. So okay, cool.

You did, I never said "more". I said he would help us win a few games, we'd obviously win "more" with Melo.
