Exactly!

Didn't you hear? Fiz says playing time will be awarded based on defense this year!

Well, that means that Frank and Dotson are in the starting backcourt. :D

Frighteningly this looks like last year. Probably after first close loss (in october/december) he will say:
This is a development year. That’s part of Randle’s development. He’s gotta take that challenge. I can’t hide him. He’s gotta dig in and get that stop. And he didn’t get it last night, but he knows I believe he can. And we’re gonna keep working at it. It was just a personnel breakdown. He knew that kid wanted to go right. He let him get right. We’ll fix that issue. Next time, we’ll get the stop.

And around late january he would say:
Julius Randle is making $20 million for two more years with us. He’s a part of our future from that standpoint.

The bolded is hysterical. Basically "why even bother" with last year's crew.

Yes that was quite the telling little tidbit by Fiz there. I remember one of the main reasons they loved Deandre Jordan was because he actually understood and could communicate what the coaches wanted the young guys to do on D. It's starting to make sense why they didn't retain anyone from last year that they weren't contractually obligated to...

The first day of Knicks coach Dave Fizdale’s second training camp was focused on a new wrinkle to his game plan — full-court defense.

“We did one-on-one full court (Tuesday),” Fizdale said after their first practice. “Everybody. The bigs, the wings and the guards had to defend each other one-on-one full-court live. Just to get them to understand we have to play defense like that to have a chance to win games.”

“Coach was just telling us he wants us to be a great defensive team,’’ Barrett said. “The only way it’s going to be happen is to keep working at it like we are.”

Fizdale, despite coming out of Pat Riley’s defense-first Heat system, never established a defensive identity for the Knicks during last season’s 17-65 campaign. They finished 29th in defensive rating, allowing 114.6 points per 100 possessions.

The Knicks coach admitted he mixed it up – maybe too much – with schemes.

“We experimented a lot last year,’’ Fizdale said. “We looked at a lot of different stuff, what fits best for our team. We feel like what we’re doing now is the best package for them.”

Fizdale said he also changed the offensive script for an older club that is more ready to handle it.

“We changed a whole lot,’’ Fizdale said. “Now I feel like we’ve got a team that can retain information and execute what you’re trying to do a little bit better. I feel like, again, the versatility that we have I want to do things that utilizes that versatility and maximizes it as much as possible.”

Not starting xcpt for Frank

Seriously though, Frank and Dot would make for a killer defensive backcourt pairing.

Fiz knows coaching on a championship level, we should not disregard this part of his resume. Additionally, Coach Fiz executed our draft position beautifully last season, allowing us a top 3 pick.

Now, he has more knowledgeable vets that are in line other great defensive minded coaches, namely Spoelstra, Thibs and Stevens. So I anticipate that we're going to see alot of hybrid Grizzlies/Heat schemes.

There's no reason to give him a clean slate. His decisions were a big part of the mess. The talent was lacking, but he chose to manage them poorly and not provide any accountability.

If he actually follows through on his words this year, everyone will come around.

I'm honestly hoping.

Nobody would love to see the Knicks return to their defensive calling card more than me.

"Small ball" has honestly been kinda dead for a while. Sixers and Raptors set the template for how to combat it.

And if we're talking seriously the Warriors weren't good be cause of going small just for the sake of going small.... They had so many smart decision makers who could play bigger than they are and a transformative defensive wing who was strong enough to battle Centers down low and protect the rim.

Small ball is still very much alive. The Raptors could go big or small. They really only had 2 true bigs on the roster in Gasol and Ibaka. They could play small ball without needing to be small. Siakam is a modem day versatile small ball player that can cover all positions. Hes not really a traditional PF type.

Not that we should do it 100% of the time, but we should def run some small ball lineups out there. We have some versatile players to run some good lineups out there.

And maybe we will see some
