Hmm question for y'all. Do you think the forum was a lot more optimistic/gullible (based on your POV) around 10+ years ago? Not sure if selective memory. For example, I feel like so many people jumped on board the Francis/Marbury bandwagon and these days, I feel a move like that wouldn't fly.

Tough call, but posters today have the advantage of knowing how trading for that star backfired multiple times.

I was excited when we got Marbury, though I was optimistic about Frank Williams, who was starting to come into his own but kind of fell off a cliff after the Marbury trade. He remains our only undefeated PG as a starter at 3-0 and he'd put a string of 4 good games together prior to missing 2 games, then a couple DNP's after Marbury joined the team. Frank suffered from depression and I think he might have had a better career if things had been different. Marbs first game with NYK was Jan-6 that year. Frank's 3 starts, 12-27 to 12-30.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willifr02/gamelog/2004

But that has nothing to do with your question.

Yes, I was excited when we got Marbury. I was less excited when Baron Davis was traded a year later for a much smaller return and I thought if NY had waited a year, they might have done much better.

I was excited when they added Crawford and again when they added Curry.

By the time they overpaid for the Melo trade, I no longer believed in that approach, and I wasn't excited. For me, I don't think it was naivete. I think it was, fool me three times, OK, but the 4th time, I no longer believe.

Interestingly, we had our best season in the last 20 years with Melo, but I never felt they had a real shot and I no longer believed in that approach, so I didn't care much.
Go Knicks!! Go Mets!!

As for the Jets . . . just keep it entertaining.

In the middle 00s I know there was more optimism because it wasn't too far removed from the then recent glory years but as the futility continued on year after year and FO after FO that optimistic hope seemed to fade until now it's more of an assumption of pessimism until proven otherwise. There's only so much false hope one can entertain.

The Melo era did seem to revive some of the optimism temporarily but there were still many that doubted the authenticity of it because they doubted Melo's ability to be the number one option on a contender he believed himself to be. They...myself included in that respect, appear to have been more accurate than some want to admit.
If you'd rather see your team fail so you can be right
...you are a fan of your opinion not the team.

I'm here. I still check in once a year. I was banned for nothing I did on any sports related board. In fact, in all my years posting here, on the Knicks board, I had one infraction and it was minor for calling flaming moe flaming poo or something like that. However, other than that, I never attacked any poster only the post. I had one thread removed in my first week of posting here titled Can You Say Lottery? Moocow zapped me on that one. But I was right. I think I posted that in December of 2004 when everyone was still optimistic about the team.

I am the one who started the crazy game threads. It was back when I was learning photoshop. I wish I still saved the first game thread post that changed the way Realgm game threads were constructed with meaningless nonsense. I used the pigeon.

And yes it was me who came up with Crawful. I still remember TKF asking me right after I used it the first time how I came up with the nicknames. I said I don't know. It all started with Mebury & then it took on a life of its own. I think bNo came up with Towelbury. I would say my 3 best were Crawful, Stiffbury, and Eddy Chubby. The first 2 were used in the NY Post.

I miss those golden days on this board. I liked everyone here and thought we all had fun stuff to bring to the table in an otherwise dreary time for the Knicks. Then it all changed. The board today is a shell of its former self. Back then, game threads would always go over 100 pages and new threads wound up on page 3 sometimes. Today, you barely have any new threads. Sad. They took all the fun out of posting here. Oh well. I'm 20 years older and don't have time anymore to talk Knicks bball. I hate the Heat, so don't go by username. I had to change things up just to have an account. Hope everyone is well, and to all those back in the day, thanks for the great laughs we had every single day.

I have some bad news for you about timelines...

But yes - the forum was more optimistic about that pairing than they are about this team. Which is weird. We're in a far better spot.

I feel like there’s been a battle of attrition on this board, whereas the more optimistic types have been exiled or self-exiled, while the remaining optimists have become jaded and cynical as a defense mechanism after years of trauma. Hence, the less optimistic bent of this board. It’ll take a good decade to so to really recover, assuming therapy sticks.

I think that's true.

It's worth adding, from 87-88 until 2000-01, 14 seasons, the Knicks made the playoffs every year. They made it to the finals twice, the conference finals 4 times, the conference semi's 11 times, so that's 11 times in 14 years they won the first round in the playoffs and were effectively one of the top 4 teams in the east. 7 of those years they won 50 games, but 11 times, a top 4 team in the east in a 14 year span is a good run.

Since 01-02, 21 seasons, not counting this year, they made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs, one of the top 4 teams in the east, once. Once in 21 years after 11 times in 14 years.

The Knicks might just be the worst team in basketball over the last 21 years. Certainly right up there, and that's following a strong run of 14 seasons. A fan base is going to be a lot more proud during 14 years of overall success than they're going to be after 21 years of mostly failure.
Go Knicks!! Go Mets!!

As for the Jets . . . just keep it entertaining.

this is true

back in the height of traffic on the board it was literally the wild Wild West here in terms of content. everything was allowed and it was fun.

but

we (people) started getting extremely toxic. It was around the Melo trade because people took sides and started chasing each other around in every thread. remember TKF basically getting run off the board for supporting Gallo, dumping on Wilson chandler and Melo. Then the mods came in and tightened everything up. Even I got banned during this time.

I feel like back then, especially in the Isiah Thomas era of the board we all kinda were in on the joke of being the laughing stock. Of course we had made moves like Dolan bidding agains himself on Allan Houston, Frederic Weis, Eddy curry trade, Isiah sexual harassment scandal and the cringey interview with Dolan, etc. but even if ppl were genuinely optimistic about the state of the team there wasn't a significant emotional investment in "needing to be good" because expectations were still hilariously low

It was Darkcloud. Just one poster.

Darkcloud posted with a bit of an edge and attitude and he talked about being from the hood, but he got his hair cut at astor barber which he also talked about, so I joked about his hood on the lower east side, which wasn't really fair, he could have lived in Harlem or some tough parts of Brooklyn, but worked in downtown. You never know. A lot of fakes on the internet, but Darkcloud posted pretty consistently, and he was convincing.

So Darkcloud was talking tough and Mugzi challenged him to a fight, or Darkcloud said he'd fight anybody on the board and Mugzi accepted . . . I don't remember exactly, but the way they were discussing it, picking a place and time to meet, it sounded like they were both serious.

Knickfan, who was a mod at the time locked the thread. Two guys setting up a fight was way outside anything he'd allow. He ran a PG board, almost rated G.

Everyone was on Team Mugzi. Nobody liked Darkcloud. I'm pretty sure the fight never happened. If it did, I didn't see any mention of it.

Appreciate the reply

Also, thanks for quoting 11 years later and making me feel old as ****.

I’ve been here on and off throughout the years, but I was actually doing the precursor to TKF’s keys when I started in the mid 00s.

Was only a young teenager then, but for at least a full season I did the post game threads as “TW’s Game Thoughts”. I know some of the old timers here remember that. TKF took over for me once I couldn’t do it anymore, as I was busy with school.

I agreed with TKF completely about the Melo trade btw, and we were all basically proved right as the team went nowhere. A few moves our way and maybe something could have happened (getting Lowry or CP3), but I just didnt like Melo’s game or attitude regardless.

The forum definitely was funnier and less PC back then. That is a common theme in general for many things though.

We lost a lot of good posters after that Melo trade. Melo signing an extra year longer than all those team USA guys said enough about his motivation.

Then another wave of posters gone after letting Jeremy Lin walk. Woulda been nice to have somebody else taking shots in those playoffs other than Jason Kidd lol.

Melo was always about the spotlight and PPG. Everything else came after.

For sure. I wonder what some OGs are up to these days. Kane, nyknicks2k2, TKF, Stutter, Blue Seats, Majorleads, Hutnik, Mugzi, Optimus, Powerforward99, Big C, etc. I see Pharmcat only posts on the General Board now.

A morbid thought is some guys who used to post here have probably died since then, and we would never know.

The trolls were just funnier back then too, but I was also more immature myself. The team being a joke made us all joke more to cope with it. 2000s internet was the golden age though. Was a free for all.

I was modded right before Linsanity btw, but I gave it up after the season because I didnt like having to do things for no money and not just be one of the guys. Lin leaving was a shock to me after what he did. Flawed player or not he still would have been useful.

Remember DocZaius? He was a troll + griefer. But the mofo was right after the Jeremy Linn saga.

Yeah, we were cap-tied anyways. We had players on long term deals. We weren't in a rebuild mode whatsoever. And all the sudden, people care about pinching pennies lol.

Melo and Dolan should have been thankful the Basketball Gods gifted a young rotational PG. We were seriously low on assets at the time, and I think Lin was signed as a 15th man. You can't ask for more than that.
