What did you expect?

part of Obi's value was his NBA readiness. PG was the clear need and Haliburton would have fit perfectly
Obi wasn't even mentioned as 1 of the best fits. everyone was talking Haliburton, because PG was the need and he was arguably the best prospect available.
I think the Knicks FO got caught up in the hometown kid factor + even tho both he and Haliburton are repped by CAA, Obi has Leon's son as part of his team of agents
Has the FO ever said that the "readiness" which lazy analysts assumed he had due to his age, was a major factor in their decision? Cause I feel like that's more of a justification that fans latched onto than an accurate assessment of him as a prospect...especially given how new to that Big life he was.
I think they just felt most confident in him growing into a good player given his intelligence, length, vertical burst, and shooting potential...while not freaking out about his age like some on here have. PWill was my guy, so after he rose too high for us I didn't really have a horse in the race left...though I'd probably have taken Deni were it my call...but I can get the thinking with Obi, even if they believed Julius would do what he's doing.
I think NBA readiness was definitely a factor considering the questions surrounding his game: defensive ability/versatility. questionable perimeter game, lack of post moves, or face-up game. he thrived mainly scoring inside/dunking on lesser athletes
+ if they believed in Julius, it makes the pick more questionable because Toppin doesn't have positional versatility like Haliburton does
