Can Bosh even get $96 million over 4 years? I thought since he took a paycut with Miami he couldn't get as much as Melo as a free agent?

That's actually an interesting point. Let's see...

Salary basis -- Bosh made $19.067 million last season.
Years of service -- Bosh has been in the NBA for 11 seasons so he's in the 10+ range (all players having been paid 10 or more years in the NBA falls in the 10+ category).

Max 1st year salary calculated by 35% of cap -- assuming that the salary cap for 2014-2015 is not significantly more than 2013-2014 then the max starting salary is going to be about $19.2 million.
Max 1st year salary calculated by 105% of players last salary -- 105% of 19.067 million = $20.02035 million.

So assuming we are basing the 1st year contract on the higher of the 2 numbers then we're talking about a 1st year contract of $20.02 million.

Now the max the Rockets can offer in terms of raises is 4.5%. Over the 4 years it would be the following:

Year 1 - $20,020,350
Year 2 - $20,020,350 x 1.045 = $20,921,266
Year 3 - $20,021,266 x 1.045 = $21,862,723
Year 4 - $21,862,722 x 1.045 = $22,846,545
===
Total about 4 years $86 million.

So unless my calculation is off (maybe it is who knows) then somethings not right.

I think Granger and McRoberts means the Heat expect the Big 3 back.

It effectively takes them out of the running to sign any free agents other than their own.

You cannot lost Bosh, then sign Melo, and then use the MLE and BAE.

I'm fairly certain IF Bosh or James sighed elsewhere, whatever deals you had with McRobert would then get converted into the cap space you created, taking that cap space away.
