my understanding is that we're talking about best point guard play, not present-for-melo's-big-year-with-kidd/sheed/thomas-leading-the-locker-room

also we did go to the playoffs with lin. then he didn't play at "85%" and that was basically the writing on the wall for his time here in new york

If memory serves correct, we were out of the playoffs (11th) when Lin & Amare went down. Then Melo went on that ridiculous tear to end 11-12 - quite possibly his best basketball of his career. Then we finished in 7th.

I was a huge Lin supporter and wanted to re-sign him. Made no sense to me that we let him go for free. Keep him, make him the 6th man with JR, then trade him if there’s too big of a glut.

We desperately needed a guard who could finish in that IND series.

Anyway, time marches on

we were on a really dire losing skid before linsanity. then we started winning, which you are correct, was continued by april melo after lin and amare went down. but linsanity was the turning point for that season

I think Brunson could be like prime Isaiah Thomas.

To be honest Brunson's body type and skill set reminds me more of Chris Paul....don't know if he can ever reach his level but a poor man's version is better than most PGs.

Oh, reading that back I realized you might not be talking about the Piston, Isiah but the other Thomas that played for Celtics among other teams. Hm.. That one was really small, JB is stronger, more physical of a player...and is just bigger.

Brunson, Randle and RJ are lefty. Anyone else?

*edit - Hartenstein shoots left also

Does this matter? Why?

JVG just likes Brunson because he ISOs a lot

*ducks and hides*

J/K

I like the JVG seal of approval.

I like that Brunson and RJ are serious minded. I get RJ could be better, the efficiency etc, but attitude matters a lot on a team.
Good to have two guys that care that are part of the future.

Not saying other guys don't, just they help set a tone.
IQ supposed to be a hard worker too, so I'd rather he not go out in a Mitchell trade but he probably would.

Added tidbit.

Jalen is a shorter player without top speed, but relies on dribble, hesitation, footwork and variety of moves and release points.

At the very least, Jalen should be able to impart some footwork lessons to RJ. I'm not going to wade into any "handle" debate, but I agree with a past take that it's hard to improve it significantly (key word) at the NBA level.

So, being on the same team as Jalen, both being gym rats, RJ might pick up some in the paint/post footwork and getting shots up tricks.

No second move. The signing is fine if it came package with something.

Fournier and Randle need to be shipped out of town.

The mitch signing was horrible.

RJ’s game took a noticeable step up last season when he added the hesi move on the perimeter. I think it was about a month into the season IIRC when he unveiled it like a new toy he’d be working on in the lab. One day he was just bulling his way to the rim, the next day he was juking from outside and hitting outside step backs or shaking loose his man and getting into the paint unobstructed. He also added in some floaters and short range step-backs once he entered the paint so he showed awareness he had to mix it up instead of trying to yam his way to the rim every time.
