The Nuggets sent a stern warning to the Nets late Monday night, threatening to trade Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks if the Nets do not keep trade talks private.
For a deal that was supposedly imminent 24 hours ago, this most recent news threatens to be a major stumbling block if the Nets and Nuggets don't stop the rhetoric. Al Iannazzone's report in the New Jersey Bergen Record from Sunday night called the Nuggets executives "inexperienced," and while that very well may be the case, by allowing this sentiment to be portrayed by one of their mouthpieces the Nets may ultimately lose their man. As for the Nuggets, they are doing themselves no favors with their fan base by threatening to take less because the Nets are behaving poorly. In any event, this trade is far from a done deal. The Nets can still offer the best package of young players and cap space, but the Nuggets appear to be holding out for more and negotiating in the media. Jan. 11 - 12:46 am et

on a scale of 1- 10 how important is winning?

For Garnet Pierce and Allen I would say 10.

For LeWadeBosh I would say 10

For Melo I would say 7 or so...

I am guessing you assume Denver wont do it. You would complain on that tarde on a NYK prespective if all w egave up was Chandler,Fields and Ronny . We would miss Ronny but i be thrilled with it form a NYK side

If they pull this off, look for Rose to arrange to have Paul go to Nets in the off season.

The Nets will be in Brooklyn in 2 years - so if Leon Rose succeeds, it may be bad for the Knicks.

I disagree. First off, if they trade for Melo, the Nets have no assets to trade for Paul, they would have to wait til free agency in 2012. As another poster already showed, even if they wanted to sign Paul, there is more cap clearing that needs to happen which will probably cause assets because Farmar and Outlaw have some nasty contracts.

As far as the Knicks are concerned, I realize that we need a second superstar and not getting Melo would suck but it's not the end of the world for us. We have three starters who are 22 years old and continue to improve. Amar'e is 28 and Felton is 26 and both are still improving as well. We are not even close to seeing the limit of this team just yet. We also still have our cap room and, as our youth improves, their value will improve to make other trades. Not getting Melo is not nearly as catastrophic for the Knicks as it is for the Nets, which is why our GM has already stated he is not gutting the team for Melo and you don't see the Knicks panicking in response to the most recent events.

Deciphering the Melo Code

Carmelo Anthony doesn't feel a trade to the Nets is imminent.

"That's my feeling. I don't think so. I don't want to elaborate on that anymore. That's just my own personal feeling," Anthony said Monday.

Response Deciphered:

"WHO?"

"I'm not signing a damn thing with them, end of discussion"

Asked if he would sign his three-year, $65 million extension to facilitate a trade to New Jersey, Anthony said: "I really don't know."

"I'm waiting to see Masai and Josh, wherever they at," he added, referring to Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri and president Josh Kroenke.

"Pretty sure they're working on whatever they're working on right now. They haven't been here. I'm waiting patiently until they get back so I can sit down with them."

Response Deciphered:

Asked if he would sign his three-year, $65 million extension to facilitate a trade to New Jersey, Anthony said: "Denver has warned me not to mess with the process so I am forced to give you an ambiguous answer."

"All this talk about I'm willing to sign an extension with those clowns is B.S, I haven't even spoken to anyone in my own organization since I told them I won't sign with anyone but NY."

"Everything your hearing is coming directly from Ujiri and Kroenke, I have not been involved in any talks. I told them who I want to sign with, whatever they do from there is out of my control."

Anthony was then asked about his rumored preference of playing for the Knicks.

"I'm here," he said. "Until something happens, I'm a Denver Nugget."

It is not like Melo or bust for us. We can keep the core (everyone) as it is and add a player that starts at 10 million as is. We are talking about a 5 year/ 55-60 million contract with increases here. There are several bigs out there who would just fit in well and I am sure we will be able to get one.

The Knicks are in a good position where they don't need to panic and make a rash move but I still think we need Melo on the roster if we want to take that next step and become a contender. Melo is a rare talent and I don't see any other pawns coming onto the free agent market anytime soon that could give us what Melo can. If Melo lands in NJ it's a crap shoot as to whether they will be able to also add CP3 the following year.

Chauncey Billups (illness) is expected to start against the Suns Tuesday.
When Billups skipped practice Monday with a "headache," it raised some eyebrows. The veteran has made it very clear he wants to finish his career in Denver and wants no part of the Nets. But Billups' agent insists that his client really was sick and the Nuggets fully expect their point guard to start tonight. Jan. 11 - 10:24 am et

You know with all those draft picks and salary cap room they could easily put together a playoff team by the time they move into Brooklyn, I guess the russian is not patient.

well thats what happens when you go to a foreign country, buy a struggling team who plays a foreign sport and then promise a ring in 5 years

NJ is going to have to take Al Harrington if they want it done. They know NJ is desperate for Melo after striking out big time in free agency this past summer. So they want to do NJ dirty as much as possible.

In NJN-DEN-DET trade DEN saves around 12 mil in salaries and 12 mio in luxury tax. They send out around 34 mil in contracts, incoming around 22 mil. That is why Billups is in the trade, for savings.

So 24 mil savings.

Let say that NY takes Melo+Harrington+Balkman+2 small contracts. That is around 26 mil going out. For trade to work they must take in at least 20 mil. So there is only 6,5 mil savings for Den, plus 6,5 mil in luxury tax.

So only 13 mil savings...

Like this trade:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachi ... Id=4nmnt2p

Curry,Azubuike,Mason,Gallinari,Fields, uta 2011 pick, ny 2014 pick
FOR
Anthony,Harrington,Balkman, Carter, Ely

....but Curry contact is 50% payed on the other hand there is trade kicker, Azubuike 80%. So additional savings would be around 2 mil on Curry and 2,5 mil on Azubuike. Lets say max 5 mil best case scenario.

So that is 18 mil savings.

Now where to get them additional savings. Here MIN comes in. Being under the cap they can take contract in but NY has to give them AR.
So they should be included in a trade and the trade expand to this:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachi ... Id=5rpmet6

MIN AR,Walker,JR Smith, 3 mil form NY
NY Telfair, Uta 2011 first
DEN /

Here Den saves additional 6,7 mil on Smith salary and 6,7 in luxury tax.

Now final DEN saving in NY trade are around 31 mil.

So comparing NJN and NY deal it looks like this:

Savings:
- 31 mil NY deal Vs. 24 mil NJN deal
Players:
- Gallinari, Field,Walker Vs. Favors,Morrow,Harris
Picks:
- NY 2013, UTA 2011 Vs. best case NJN 2011 lottery, GSW lottery

Still NJN has a better package because of picks and Harris that will be traded for another prospect. It is close, but...

I don't know what part of not gutting the roster, people don't understand. We either get him on a discount or via free agency or he is not coming. We are simply not going to bid against NJ. End of story.
