WE ARE NOT A TANKING TEAM, PERIOD. Tanking teams do not have a top 10 player in the league IN HIS PRIME. The concept of tanking with Melo on the roster in his prime is just laughable. The Knicks situation is so much different than that of Philly, Utah, Minnesota, Milwaukee, etc. We are not developing a star young player this season. We barely even have any young guys on the roster. To the extent Phil can make in-season trades to improve the team (while not hurting us long-term), he should absolutely do it. Fisher needs to establish a winning culture among the players that will be here in 2015 and beyond. He needs to establish his system. He needs to make himself and the team look like attractive options for free agents in 2015. If we end up with a lottery pick because the team just wasn't good enough to qualify for the playoffs, so be it, it's a consolation. Nobody should be rooting for that though. A 19 year old kid does not help a 2015 win-now Knicks roster with Melo as the centerpiece. You'd be a fool to think it would. Look at how quickly Lebron shipped out Wiggins from his win-now team and ANY FAN IS LYING TO THEMSELVES if they think this season will result in the Knicks getting a draft prospect better than Wiggins. So fans need to just stop the tank nonsense, the tank talk, it's embarrassing quite frankly.

And look who they got for Wiggins. A ready made all-star in Kevin Love.

No one says we have to keep the pick. But high draft picks have trade value. You could always trade the pick for a all-star caliber player and then sign one FA and then bam you have 3 all-stars on your team.

Kinda like how the Celtics did it with Pierce.

I can't see how anyone is confident with this game.
Until Larkin is not the starting PG, the Knicks will continue to be a bottom 5 team.

That's a fair point, but I just don't see how people think this roster is going to yield a top 3 pick. It won't. Last year we started out 3-13 and still finished with 37 wins. Even though it may be rocky for a while, once vets are back healthy and the team gels a little more, it is going to win at least 30 games, and more than likely 35+. So really fans are hoping for a pick in the 8-11 range at best. I mean come on. Not to mention, we are in Melo's prime!!! Get me in that 7-8 seed and give me a series against the Cavs/Bulls, maybe the guy just goes nuts for a series, crazier things have happened in this league. At least it is some excitement and something to build on. Something that a free agent like Gasol might want to be a part of. Do people really think Gasol is going to be eager to go from a 55+ win team to a 25 win team? NOT LIKELY

see I disagree about what upcoming FA want. They want to play with good players. Why would Marc Gasol care about if we got into the 8th seed barely and made the playoffs. Rather than going like 28-54 or 30-52?

The guys on this team wont be on next years team outside of a few select players. So what if guys like JR, Amare, and Bargs actually wake up and start playing decent basketball. They wont be here.

I think the better recruiting tactic would be. Hey Marc, we have Melo. We have a top whatever pick that we are thinking about trading for another really solid player. If you come we can have a build a team surrounded by you, Melo and that other really good player via trade.

Instead it will be come to NY Marc. We have Melo, Jose, and a mid round draft pick. But year we snuck into the 8th seed in the east. We are changing the culture.

Which sounds more enticing?

I blame Melo.

By the time this thing turns around in 2018, Melo will probably be out of the league.
His numbers are down across the board this season.

I don't mean to butt in but the reason we were 3-13 is mainly because of Tyson going down with his injury & our defense suffered.

Bargs & Calderon are nothing close to Tyson on defense so how do you think we're gonna be when they return?

Still sh*tty.

We need to find a way to lose at least 4 out of those 5 games. After this five game stretch, our schedule gets brutal and the tank should be rolling easily.

I think the pitch is... "We have a good, young head coach who took a middling roster to the playoffs last season. We have Melo. We have young players who grew in the system last season (THJ, Shumpert, Larkin?, Early?) and gained valuable playoff experience. We are already one of the top 8 teams in the East, won over 40 games last season, and you can get us to the upper echelon."

I don't see how a 25-28 win team can be pitched as to the head coach or direction of the team to a top free agent. The only pitch at that point is NYC and Melo. Fisher will be viewed as a garbage coach running a bad system if we win 25 or so games. Don't lose sight of some of these free agents coming from 50+ win teams. How do you sell a team that won under 30 games the season before to players of that caliber and background? It's not as easy as you think. If the market was all that mattered, why are the Lakers whiffing on free agents these days?

it's not tanking, it's what's best for the betterment of this team

melo + top 5 pick is a lot more attractive to free agents than just melo + the 1 trick pony thj

Knicks are not tanking guys.
They are just a terrible team without Calderon and Bargnani in there. They can't score and the PG play has been atrocious.
If Calderon and Bargnani were fully healthy, we would be no worse then 4-4 right now.

Unfortunately both players are injury prone p******s and by the time they come back and get into NBA shape, the Knicks will be 10-15 games under .500
