Tom Thibodeau To The Knicks 90% Likely!

I would have had optimism for Thibs if he had just been let go by Chicago a few years ago, but this is the main reason I don't want him now:

When Thibs got fired, he took a year off to regroup. There were all these news articles about how he was going around the NBA to reflect and learn from all these amazing cultures and learn from his mistakes (I googled one really quickly: https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/06/sports/tom-thibodeau-minnesota-timberwolves-chicago-bulls-basketball.html). I read those articles and thought: whoa, that's pretty nice. Imagine if a defensive mastermind like Thibs can actually improve on his weaknesses. In this article, he talks about how he's appreciating analytics more, learning to pick up pace, etc. I was pretty pissed when the Knicks didn't hire him (then again, he couldn't run the triangle...come to think of it, Phil was such a cancer).

Well, fast forward. Thibs is hired by Minnesota, and promptly shows he spent all that time around all these great coaches and learned...jack ****. That's some JR Smith, Carmelo Anthony type of inability to learn **** going on there We get pissed off at our players for inability to learn and improve. Well, this guy actually got to take a year off, learn from all these franchises, and still not improve.

So yea, I don't really hold his coaching in great regard. Even more, I don't hold his ability to learn and adapt in great regard.

Considering that kat as one of the worst defensive +/- in the leage and wiggs is the definition of empty stats... can you really blame tibs for minny?

Can't be mad with Thibs as a choice although one could argue that we needed a young offensive mind.
He will bring legitimacy to the position and coach the hell out of these guys.
Not true at all that he doesn't develop players.. see Jimmy Butler, Deng, Noah etc

To be clear, the crux of the article was supposed to be that Leon Rose is all but set to take over as Knicks President, and that the move could happen as soon as this week. In the process of researching that story, I heard from someone I trust that Thibs was also a heavy favorite to become the head coach.

I can’t emphasize this enough: a lot can change between now and the end of the season, especially with the possibility that other coaches could unexpectedly be fired or emerge as willing candidates for this job. But based on what the Knicks’ seem to be thinking right now, I’d be shocked if the Iceman himself isn’t the man that ends up with it.

Based on my replies and mentions last night, that doesn’t seem to be sitting well with a lot of people. And I get it. Thibs didn’t exactly leave Minnesota on a high note, getting fired midway through last season with a record of 19-21 after failing to bring his special brew with him from Chicago to the Wolves.

Also, thought this quote from Taj was interesting...kinda a shot at Wiggins/KAT while vouching for Thibs.

Which brings us to today, or more accurately, a few weeks ago. I mentioned it here but in case you missed it, Taj Gibson was in the locker room right before the break talking about his former coach with both the Bulls and Wolves, and said in no uncertain terms that if you have players who are willing to be coached, Thibs is the guy you want.

That last part got me excited for Frank Dotson RJ and Mitch. I have no evidence to say the others wouldn’t welcome it, but these 4 to me seem like they would relish it.

This is exactly the kind of relationship-hire we can expect from Dolan’s new guy. Just like Dolan promotes through the ranks based on loyalty, not skill. We can expect Leon to prioritize relationships over basketball relevance.

Yeah, it seems like it could work out well for those guys together with Thibs, which also happen to be all the guys I want to see start developing together. I can see a fit there.

My first reaction was that it would be a bad hire, but there are some qualities that Thibs brings to the table which could be good. If it were to happen i would have a wait and see approach.

Macri isn't really a guy who is trying to break news. He legit just passes info along when he hears it, but he's very transparent about his level of access. He only speaks when he has good reason.

He's not like SAS, claiming to be a player's best friend or anything.

Need to go back and see how Thibs treated Carlos Boozer. That's the true parallel here.

From what I can recall Boozer was a guys with marginal defensive aptitude and effort when he was on the Jazz. Although limited I think Thibs got him to a point of basic competency... I know he at least tried in Chicago. I suspect Randle will want out though...I believe that he's too soft and egotistical to be challenged directly.
