We need to do something with Julius tho. Toppin needs to start.

This can easily be a Kanter-Willi-type situation - how does the rookie outplay the vet (who was in this case the #1 option last year) in such a short training camp/preseason?

Nobody wants him or he would have been traded last year.

tank aspirations aside, we just probably have to use the following decision tree to have things make sense.

1) Are Tyrese Haliburtion & Kira Lewis franchise-caliber PGs? If not, are they just as talented, if not more, than Toppin?

If any of these questions are NO, then you have to find a PG in free agency or trade. To set things clearly, neither Tyrell Terry or Malachi Flynn preclude the need for signing a vet PG. Drafting those two just mean that Frank/DSJ aren't bench caliber PGs.

2) Can you acquire a PG via trade? In other words, can you pull off the Rubio deal? Probably not.

3) Are there better options as free agents? Looking at it, probably not.

The funny thing is that the Mavs may have made Burke a useful NBA player. He was terrible (and with the patented pouting) in the half season of the trade. The Mavs let him go and told him, essentially, 'you have to be able to make 3s - no one gives a stuff about your dribbling, driving or long 2s', and lo and behold he came back a year later seemingly able to do that. So that's another one on terrible NYK coaching. (And other coaches before that not getting much out of Burke.)

Burke was always an NBA player it's just the fact there isnt much opportunity in the NBA..he was on the 76ers roster and cut right before the playoffs if you remember.

He just found a spot where he could come off the bench and score. Mavs played him to his strengh's..he was still dribbling and getting to the rim in the playoffs.

How does that make him a trade chip when we’re the only team that wants him????????????

So deflating. He had ZERO interest last year in setting up the kids and helping them develop on the court. He sucked. Period. Now he's back again. Oh...and we signed Alec Burks too! Fuggin fantastic!!

Bring back Gibson and push the kids further down he bench!! Seems like the logical thing to do.

He and Randle are the two guys I didn’t wanna see play again, ever. Even for the opposing team. Knicks will always **** Knick. He better not be starting.

+2.4 with Mitch

-7.3 without Mitch

Granted, he had the best Net with Mitch of all the PGs, but it's clear Mitch is doing the heavy lifting here.

The staff knew that Elf wasn't the point guard and released him. However, he hasn't gotten any offers, the guards are all gone and the Team needs a backup. If there are any nicks or small injuries, Elfrin can step in and get some run.

While Elfrin has a lot to be desired as a point his defense is legit and Thibs wants to be competitive from day1. DSJ, Quickley and a little Frank will get all the minutes at point trust me.

But the Team wants shooters obviously and my gut feeling is that Quickley will eventually get bigger minutes as the season progresses.

Elf isn't a good defender. He can d up when he wants, but he's not consistently engaged on that end. He's more of a guy that gambles for the ball to rack up steals. It works sometimes, other times it puts a lot of pressure on his teammates to make up for his mistake

Totally agree with that. That was another instance of the previous FO having essentially no understanding at all. But what I found interesting was that Carlisle basically told him to cut out the things that didn't help a team win and get better at those which might help. And, fair play, Burke does seem to have gone away and done that.

Play Frank and DSJ. Let Quickley get minutes there. No need to sign Payton at all. He is trash and he is NOT about player development. He proved that last year. Really a terrible signing. Burks as well. Play the kids. Play the kids. Play the kids. If you are gonna bring in trash...make it another teams trash with picks attached.

Frank better pick up his offense this year. That's all I care about at the PG position. Maybe DSJ turning it around would be interesting but...with Payton here...where will the minutes come from for Frank and Dennis to get a look?

I don't even have a beef with Payton. This is just a poor decision making move that doesn't help any situation. Team loses, Payton loses, it's all bad.
