Is it a great name though? I mean we all love it because we're fans and it's engrained into our DNA, but it's still a pair of dumb looking pants at the end of the day. I bet 75% of regular Knicks fans don't even know that the team goes by a shortened version of Knickerbocker pants. I'm not trying to bash our beloved Knicks name here; it just gets you thinking when the full name comes up into a conversation every decade or so.
No one cares what it means. Do you think the "Lakers" are techically a great name? Hell no, but it's a great name cause it just makes sense (even if LA isn't known for lakes). It feels right. Same thing with the Knicks.
This. Yeah it's a great name. It means New York basketball. Lakers, Dodgers ( named for Brooklyn trolley dodgers), Packers, Yankees, these are all great, historical iconic team names.
Lakers = lakes. Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, so it made sense when the team was the Minneapolis lakers.
Like the Utah Jazz - made more sense when they were the New Orleans Jazz.
I think those are cool names. I think Father Knickerbocker is a pretty cool reference, even if it's so dated, nobody knows who Father Knickerbocker is anymore.
God invented war so Americans would learn geography.
