If Isiah Were in Charge:

1) Mitch Robinson + 8th + 27th for #2 + Wiggins
2) Drafts Obi Toppin with #2
3) Trades RJ, Frank, two Dallas picks for Westbrook
4) Signs Carmelo for full MLE 4 years
5) Trades Randle + three 1st rounders for Chris Paul

Paul
Westbrook
Wiggins
Melo
Taj Gibson

6th seed in the first year
lotto team the next three seasons when Paul and/or Westbrook get injured; only second rounders left to upgrade talent

It’s not that you're wrong but it just seems out of whack to have 1 guy making nearly half the salary cap

In the NBA that isn’t too crazy. One player can carry a team most nights if they are a superstar. If Russ was playing like a superstar then that contract isn’t a bad contract. It’s when their level of play starts to deteriorate or they can’t carry you as far as you hoped that you then look at those contracts as bad contracts. Which is Russ’ issue. He is a superstar but so flawed you don’t think you can win it all with him.

If the Knicks can get him for something reasonable I think it’s not a disaster. They just can’t sell the farm for him because he isn’t a superstar who can win it all. He is a superstar that is flawed and needs to be built around which takes assets. The same thing happened with Melo that is happening with Russ. The Melo years could have had better teams to put around around Melo and won more, if the Knicks had better managed their assets to better to build around Melo. Russ could still be successful in the league if the team that gets him have assets to build around him.

That cap spike money dried up quick though. But here it is - people aren't worried about Anthony Davis' money or LeBron's money. It's when you **** it up with a Mike Conley or declining Paul/Westbrook that all of a sudden the CBA is a problem. What it was was a bunch of teams on the fringe trying to stay relevant during the cap spike.

I'll say something wild here... but the Knicks actually kept their dicks in their pants for the cap spike and if they don't **** it up by getting a Westbrook without MAJOR asset compensation they can be positioned to start getting the bargains on lower end star players and continue building the asset base that you need to ultimately bring home the big stars when they get grumpy. The franchise just needs to be committed to three years out instead of six months and I think you're gonna see this franchise turn around hard. We're positioned really well for a change. Lots of assets and low cap/limited liabilities.

People can actually look at that history of the 8th pick and say "no don't reach for anybody at 8"

No, REACH! Reach for somebody projected to go 2nd round if you have to

ad is still young and lebron is the rare old guy that makes that much money and lives up to it. but it's like i said, at age 30 your salary is still going up when it should probably start heading down again instead. it's not logical that a 32 year old star makes more than a 28 year old one.

agreed but 3 years is a long time to ask this fanbase to wait. you better somehow make the playoffs during these 3 years.

Past results of a draft pick don't indicate anything. They're completely independent results. I'd look more at ranges of picks for trends than individual ones once you get past pick 5.

I'd also hop on that Magic deal for Aaron Gordon and hope Kira falls to 15. He could be a better version of what we thought Randle was. Flip Randle somewhere else.
