Sure he was quicker in his youth but I wouldn't ever call his first step elite, his game was crafty dribble drive off elite shooting.
His game was more based on craftiness than athleticism you're right but Pierce was a very good athlete who could blow past his man in 1v1 situations and (sometimes) explode at the rim.
Pierce was both craftier and more athletic than RJ imo.
RJ has a lot of qualities though, I wasn't trying to downplay his potential. I just think Pierce had better tools entering the NBA to carve out a HOF career.
But as you said, intelligence can go a long way and RJ has plenty. I'm confident he'll make the most of his abilities.
Something to consider is the era of basketball these two guys came into the league.
Obviously RJ is now with the no touch rules on the perimeter so players have to play with their feet and most give more cushion so it's more difficult to 'blow by' on quickness and speed.
PP came into a league that still had alot more perimeter contact and if I recall correctly they were down to just one hand at a time that could be on the body. Don't know where to find that info and my google skills are not too great.
He shot the ball really well and his handle was much better coming into the league than RJ has had so he used his shiftiness that RJ also doesn't possess in the same quality he was able to get by people easier even with the added contact.
RJ doesn't really have the dribble skills to capitalize on the space he's being given and his shooting hadn't commanded the attention to attack that way either.
Just looking at footspeed of the two guys from their initial years it seems negligible in difference between the two. PP just had way better ball skills right away and his body control on changing speeds was superior as well while RJ's strength doesn't really help him much yet.
I think the point stands though that RJ can have success without being all that quick using skill and BBIQ.
