The Toronto Raptors bogarted the league’s best team — the Detroit Pistons — for a 111-97 thrashing at home in Scotiabank Arena, becoming the only team to defeat the Pistons twice.
Jrue Holiday and Amen Thompson went off offensively, while Rudy Gobert put up another impressive double-double. Sixth Man of the Year award favorite Michael Porter Jr. led the bench efforts for the 2nd unit.
Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama was a non-factor offensively, yet made his impact by holding Anthony Davis to an awful 5-17 shooting night (29%) for only 11 points.
Likewise, Jrue Holiday put the clamps on Luka Doncic, harassing him into a ghastly 5-20 from the field (25%), 1-10 from three (10%) for an inefficient 15 points.
Scottie Barnes took 23 shots to get 20 points as he was outplayed by his wing counterpart Thompson, and Desmond Bane was 1-8 (12.5%) and 0-4 from three, completely locked up by Derrick White.
Overall Toronto’s formidable defense held Detroit to an unsightly 39.6% field goal percentage and an anemic 27.3% from behind the arc.
Despite the Pistons accumulation of defensive bigs, they played like Lilliputians on this night, as Toronto outrebounded the Motor City 54-45, a plus-9 margin on the boards.
Toronto’s record improves to 51-12, still atop the Atlantic Division by a full 4 games, despite the Brooklyn Nets’ current 12 game winning streak.
Detroit’s Eastern Conference lead is now cut to 3.5 games with none remaining against Toronto for the remainder of the season. With the two championship contenders splitting the season series 2-2.
