The Knicks' front office, led by team president Leon Rose, continues to leverage their relationships throughout this search. The team is still gathering information on various candidates. Targets like Kidd and Jenkins have indeed emerged as ‘early favorites.'

Typically, however, New York performs its organizational due diligence. Here, that means continuing to collect intelligence on top candidates from all over their list as they wait on Kidd and the Mavericks.

Some of those coaches have experience at the NBA level, like Kidd himself and Jenkins. Sources familiar with the situation tell ClutchPoints the Knicks are also still looking into, and organizing thoughts on, candidates who coach at the collegiate level.

With regard to Kidd and the team's steady interest in him as their potential next head coach, the Mavericks' rejection of the Knicks' request to interview Kidd didn't stop the chase. The ‘mutual interest' reported to exist between Kidd and the Knicks was a sign that it wouldn't.

Until Kidd and the Mavericks either reach an agreement on an extension and raise or agree to leave their contract as-is, the proverbial door technically remains open. Sources tell ClutchPoints the Knicks will pursue Kidd until that door is firmly shut.

If Kidd and the Mavericks make a final decision to continue their partnership, the Knicks will need to move on. They won't have to conduct much of a ‘pivot,' though. They will need to break down and continue to supplement the information they've gathered on other top candidates.

Not sure that's how it will work. Kidd either stays or leaves. So far it looks like he's staying.

Her thinking that he underachieved with the players they had is pure homerism. Even here where we are all a little crazy no one is really saying Tom under achieved.

Especially with their crazy injuries and Ja waiving guns around. That team was under duress fairly often.

I have no sympathy for the gun stuff. Anyone else would be doing time for that.

Ja physically assaulted a minor and he or someone he was with pointed a red dot laser from a gun at another teams traveling party.

The brandishing guns on camera is stupid, but not illegal. But what he did above? He absolutely is lucky that he's not in prison.

Kidd is not a loyal employee and his last extension was to coach Luka and a team that went to the finals. Now he is being asked to build up a rookie.

I don’t think Kidd comes here, but I do think Kidd (and CAA) wants that new extension.

There was a great article in The Strickland posted in the other thread but I think something that is hinted at but not said directly about the Thibs firing in the better Knicks media out there is that the cold war that had been simmering between the FO and Thibs was about to get HOT this year. More than anything, that was about nipping that conflict in the bud because once you start going downhill with Thibs he digs harder and harder, starts using the media, and things of that nature. This is actually his cleanest departure of his three stops.

Both Jenkins and Brown are much more flexible with how they work with front offices and that's probably a high level factor as to why their candidacy (and not Mike Malone, for example) is reported to be gaining traction.

If those really are the choices, I'm with you that Jenkins is the far more intriguing option. I'd worry about defense under Brown.

You just have to hope that whatever the front office wants the coach to be aligned with, results in a chip. If not, then imo firing Thibs was just a bad decision and we should’ve just let him cook. Time will tell.

I like how suddenly every coach is a genius that can instantly develop the kids, install the best offense, and make us win a championship but where were all these coaches in the last 25 years for us when we needed them

The Mavs give Kidd an extension before the draft so Rose gets another coach paid but then doesn't make the decision on who he hires until after the draft.

Does he do it before the draft? Possibly but as I said earlier in the thread and seems to be agreed with by Hahn, they need to have the coach before the end of the NBA year.

The day that the negotiations with FAs can begin the Knicks will have their coach in place by then, there's no real rush to get one in place for a second round pick.
