I don’t see how the mavs can give him another extension. What coach gets a 7 year commitment ? Nobody.

True. I mean, I'd prefer to have a coach by next week, but with only that late 2nd round pick, makes the most sense.

Especially since whoever the Knicks pick at 50, not one NBA coach would be giving any minutes to so no input is needed.

Jenkins would turn the 50th pick into a starter within 3 months but Thibs turns lottery picks into two 2nds

Reporters like Stein are already saying that Kidd would need another extension to stay.
I doubt that info is coming from the Mavs or the Knicks, so its clear whose camp told him that.
Why would they leak that to the press? They can simply tell the FO and settle their business. They have leverage to do so without needing to leak that.
He's hiring assistants and meeting with their draft pick. Going through the business as usual motions. I am not sure that would happen if there was an extension issue. Pretty facked up if that was the case.
With Jason Kidd, you never know. He could be doing all of that and still back channel talking with Leon and co.
The dude does not care. He will burn the entire bridge down if it means he gets what he really wants.

I saw him play and he seemed to have potential, but of course, he didn't play enough for us to know exactly how much potential. Part of it was his early season recovery, but after he returned, I think the coach might have been the reason for his not playing much.

Re: Official Knicks Coaching Search Thread pt. 2 (update: poll added 6/18/25)
I guess it shouldn't matter much if the Knicks don't have a new coach by the time of the draft if their plan is only to take 1 guy late in the draft but a ton of things happened with the Knicks last off-season between the end of the finals and the start of free agency. Some opportunities may be available right now that a new coach could have some input on.
I don't know what Thibs stance was on the value sent out in the Mikal trade and making all those moves in the draft without having a commitment from iHart to come back. A different coach may have had a different opinion and may have been able to convince the organization to go another way which could have resulted in a completely different roster right now.

Or hear me out they trade 50 for some future seconds…. Like they’ve done before.

I can't see it. I'm assuming they will just pick someone at the end of the 2nd to have another cheap player to fill out the roster under the 2nd apron but i'm sure there are many teams making trading offers revolving around the draft. We've already seen 2 trades during the finals.

I could see it. Every year people trade seconds for future seconds cause they want to get someone under contract. Especially if it’s a 1 for 1 trade or a young team that knows they can get more seconds whenever.
To put it into perspective we got 4 rookies last year that can use development, Nnaji is coming over, and Marjon is still a young guy too. That is 6 guys the next coach got to develop who have decent upside. Drafting someone at 50 unless they really like him isn’t the best use for that pick.

Re: Official Knicks Coaching Search Thread pt. 2 (update: poll added 6/18/25)
Some news from stein
The loudest rumbles in NBA coaching circles this week are indeed New York Knicks-related.
After we reported Thursday that Mike Brown had indeed formally interviewed for New York's coaching vacancy, one source briefed on the process said Friday night that a hiring is not expected until after next week's draft, which will play out in two separated rounds Wednesday and Thursday for the second year in a row.
Both Brown and former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins are known to have interviewed this week and both are said to have levels of support within the organization as the Knicks chase their successor to Tom Thibodeau.
Brown, who was fired by Sacramento in December just months after the Kings gave him a contract extension, is said to have a strong relationship with Knicks executive William Wesley, who frequently interacted with Brown when World Wide Wes, as he is known, worked closely with a young LeBron James in the days James played for Brown in Cleveland in his first stint as a Cavalier. Yet we've also heard that Jenkins made a positive impression in his talks this week with Knicks brass.
The Knicks, of course, began their search after abruptly firing Thibodeau on June 3 … and then asked for permission a week or so later to speak to five coaches currently under contract: Houston's Ime Udoka, Minnesota's Chris Finch, Atlanta's Quin Snyder, Chicago's Billy Donovan and Dallas' Jason Kidd ... with Kidd frequently cited in coaching circles as New York's presumed top choice.
All five teams swiftly rejected those overtures

It’s like when lil bitches make subliminal records, if it ain’t directed directly at me, I don’t respect it

Your right depending on the cap management the Knicks could choose to move the pick although I wouldn't expect to get multiple future 2nds unless they are heavily protected for the 50th pick. You might get that or a swap but nothing of much value.
Right now the Knicks have 9 players in KAT, OG, Brunson, Bridges, Hart, Mitch, Deuce, Kolek and Dadiet under guaranteed contracts, 10 if they pickup Hukporti's team option. I believe that would leave them $11M~ under the 2nd apron for 10 players. If they use taxpayer MLE($5.7M) on someone they may have a little less than $6M to fill the last 3-4 roster spots. Signing that 2nd round pick to the rookie min of $1.1M gives them a little more wiggle room to pick up a few vet min guys to fill out of the roster if they don't trade anybody. That's what they did with Hukporti last year.
They could also put the 2nd round pick on a two-way deal the same way they did with McCullar. There are 3 two-way spots available that have to be filled with guys with 3 years of experience or less. Either way I wouldn't mind if the new coach was involved in these decisions.
