I think we keep looking the wrong way at this Melo trade. There is a positive to keeping Melo this season, but with how competitive 6-10 in the West looks to be down the stretch, Denver needs to re-think things. Now Denver fans may complain about what they get in return for Melo, but Melo has an obvious destination and Denver does not have much leverage to trade him. I think Denver could get good value in return for dumping Billups, nene, and JR. Smith before the deadline. They could get multiple first round picks if they trade all of those players in separate deals. You don't think the Bulls would trade picks for JR. Smith? Nene has huge value around the league, especially amongst teams wondering how they can stack up to Boston and LA's front-line. And there probably are a couple younger playoff teams that would swing a trade for Billups to guide the team. Denver should blow this up. Trade Melo to the Knicks for whatever young players they can get, then do the same for the rest of their roster.

Teams often keep players off the court when a trade is close, so they don't pick up an injury and mess up a deal. If Melo suffered a serious injury that would cause him to have to have surgery, DEN will be unable to trade him for value, and get zero.

If DEN played Melo and he got hurt, and they'd passed up on even some of the lower deals NYK has offered because they asked for the motherload, this would be resignation-time for somebody in their front office.
