I dont know how there are enough picks of value to satisfy everyone in this. Utah could flip the Minnesota pucks I guess but that's a hefty price tag to walk away with Ayton. I call bs

Jazz would take Ayton, Cam Johnson and half the picks from PHX
BRK would take Mitchell, Bridges and half the picks from PHX
PHX would take KD and maybe a couple role players from UTA.

Ben Simmons would need to be moved somewhere.

Who would take Simmons? Very hard to trade that contract.

Maybe a desperate small market team

F Isaac - Toppin
C Mitch - Hartenstein - Sims

Love Obi getting 25-30 minutes and the offense can run through him and IQ there on the second unit.

Mitchell isn't a generational talent to offer 8 picks plus Julius and Cam for. He is highly overrated in this forum. Volume scorer with one of the highest usage rates in the league. Not a great fit if we just signed Brunson to so the same thing.

I'd be ok with anything from 5/120 to 5/150 but I'm higher on RJ than most.

Why so much when he hasn't demonstrated he can even be a net positive for your team? (Which isn't to say that he never will be able to in the future)

Also, and I think this is what I feel most strongly about, why take the risk now? Why not wait a year?

If he plays well this upcoming season, and he demonstrates that he's actually tangibly worthy of that type of contract, then the difference in salary from your offer won't be significant or matter that much.

But if he fails to improve and he doesn't impact winning, you can then make a more informed decision, and decide to sign him a more modest contract that better reflects his (in this scenario) lack of impact, or trade him.

Extending RJ now for this kind of money would be incredibly impatient in my opinion. I don't see the need for this level of urgency. So, why?

Yeah, what’s the rush?

Not unless we are getting a franchise level player who almost guarantees those years won't be losing seasons and those unprotected picks won't become high lottery picks. I am all for trading 4/6 first round picks we have in the '23 draft but hell no to unprotected picks. If "star" players like Spidermitch cost too much, I'd pass and wait until a trade and player becomes available that makes sense. This is the new NBA. Star players become available all the time! Wait until one comes along that makes sense and our assets are good enough to acquire him and it doesn't put us at risk to give up a top 5 pick in multiple seasons!

Just like the last 20 years. Why is anything different now? No one wants to play here. Not stars at least. It's just too much pressure on them and kids in this day and age don't want that drama. They can't handle it. Plus, they know the Knicks have been the laughing stock of the NBA for 20 years as well.

I can assure you this FO ain’t thinking about next years draft at all

We riot if they dont draft all 5 picks next year.

Whatever they decide it will probably not be until next year unless they REALLY want D Mitchell right now

There is no need to have draft threads for at the least the next 3 years. They will eventually all be traded away, or they will punt and get a future pick. They have zero interest in having any rookies on the squad.

We did not unload a single one of them so far, but we did add a legit PG

They used our journeyman vets and picks to engineer this so far

That doesn’t mean they won’t package some of our youth in a future deal, but I think the implications so far is the franchise may finally be committed to sustaining a pipeline of developing players

Several of our youths are going to have very good and long NBA careers. In the past they would have been gone already, but they’re still here

So things are not the Same Old Same Old as past FO’s so far. There are differences if you stop bitching for a moment and pay attention to things as they actually are

Some of you guys love to pretend the Knicks FO didn't just have to unload future assets to get rid of the horrible contracts they just signed last year. If you take a minute to think about that, you'll realize how bad that really is. How some of you can defend that is beyond me. Plus they traded out of the last two drafts, which was our only opportunity to get some young talented players in the lottery.

Also, they signed Randle a year before they had to, and gave Fournier a bag too. Those two are also negative assets.

I can guarantee you this.. in 2-3 years we'll have threads about the players we could have drafted the past two years but we decided to punt. There WILL be a few future stars that were taken in draft slots that could have been ours.

I'm not complaining about Brunson. I actually think it's a pretty good signing. But to pretend the FO didn't completely f*ck sh*t up last year, and then had to try to correct their mistakes this year is just as bad as some of us complaining about every move they make. Be real man, this FO is way below average across the NBA. We're still LOL Knicks, if you haven't noticed.

From this article on whether the Knicks are a playoff team now, this response was on point. We do have youth and depth now, but Randle is unreliable and selfish and Thibs doesn’t know how to manage the depth we have.

I still think replacing Thibs would be an even more beneficial move than trading Randle which I want too of course.

Joe Flynn: No. Could the Knicks compete for a playoff spot? Absolutely. They have talent and depth. They have a handful of young players who seem primed for a breakout. But this is still Tom Thibodeau’s team, sadly. Thibs helped the Knicks to the playoffs when he could play an All-NBA-level Julius Randle 40 minutes a night and got 6MOY-level contributions out of Derrick Rose. This current roster, however, is built on youth and depth — two ideals that are anathema to Thibs. I don’t trust Randle to bounce back, and I don’t trust Thibs to pivot to an ascendant Obi Toppin. Now, if the front office trades Randle and forces Thibs’ hand, that’s another story.

I guess play in does count as the playoffs. We will struggle to stay above .500. Which is fine, I guess. But we're locked into this team for the next 3 years at least, so we all just have to accept it and move on. You're right about that part. Doesn't mean it's a great strategy but that's where we are.

This is the next 3 years capwise:

Randle 5/117
Brunson 4/106
Mitch 4/60
RJ 5/150 (guess)
Fournier 4/73 (can't remember the exact number)

This is the team and that's that. No stars are coming here, and we're right in that middling spot which is one of the worst places to be in. Plus, this team does not give a sh*t about the draft, so we won't be adding talent that route either.

Big enough, if he gets 150 million half this front page is gonna be rj hate threads. Hell might be like that if he gets 100 million

Sucks that you always have to put this disclaimer when posting about RJ in here. Facts are facts and stats are stats, but you'll get run out of here if you simply say let's take a big pause before we hand RJ a bag.

Sorry folks, RJ is not worth 100+ million dollars. People don't realize how bad a contract like that could turn out. We're going to be locked into these contracts we're dishing out, so if they don't pan out we're LOL Knicks for the next 5-6 years. If you're a realist around here you take so much flack.

Why can't we just wait a year before we hand RJ the bag, just like we should have done with Randle?

It's like everyone has forgotten that we just made a monumental mistake with Randle a short year ago.

What is the damn hurry? Make RJ earn this contract. His play this year should determine the number he gets. Nothing wrong with that, is there?

This is just your opinion but you state it as fact. Mitchell is one hell of a player, and he's only 25. When he gets traded to the Heat and they win the title what are you gonna say then? He didn't have the right squad around him in Utah. That's not his fault. Let's wait to see how the next 5 years of his career go before trying to say he's not a winner. Is he generational? No. But who is? Tell me how many players in the NBA are generational talents right now. Luka? Ja possibly? Giannis? Curry? Who else? LBJ of course but no need to mention him. Where does he rank in the league in your eyes?

Imagine if the Lakers somehow get Kyrie for Westbrook (and other assets).

I KNEW the Lakers would pull some sh*t out of their ass (I'm swearing a lot today for some reason  )

They always do. And most will say Kyrie can't win, isn't reliable, etc.. but I bet if he goes to the Lakers he proves everyone wrong. Talent wise, there are not a lot of players in the league who have more talent than he does. And he's still relatively young. I bet we have not seen the last of Kyrie.

Exacty Wingo. I don't get it, especially coming from Knicks fans. We didn't learn any lessons from the Randle contract debacle. This could be Randle Part 2. Knicks need to be really careful with this RJ contract. I don't believe in our FO, but HOPEFULLY they realize they made so many mistakes last year and they have learned from those mistakes. I mean, how could you not?? You're giving away assets just to dump the contracts you gave out last year.
