I'm somewhere in the middle. It's not just whether Escobar struggles, but they also like Baty and could decide to give him a look.
Escobar in 2022 had a fine April: .253 / .378 / .425 / .807
A bad May & June: .210 / .240 / .355 / .595
A little better in July: .220 / .245 / .462 / .706 (6 homers in 22 games)
A terrible August: .177 / .222 / .235 / .458
And a strong finish, September & 4 games in October: .321 / .385 / .596 / .982 (8 homers in 30 games).
His April & Sept had high babips, so grain of salt. His poor stats had low babips.
He also had 15 of his 40 walks in April. 13 walks in his first 15 games after which his walk rate went way down.
Players can get hot or cold so all of this should be taken with a grain of salt but it's not just his 1 for 16 start this year, but also, his poor spring, his poor WBC, his age (34), that said Canha and Marte are both 34 and Pham is 35, but still, 34 is a concern. His sub 300 OBP last year. All are concerns.
The biggest factor is that Baty looks ready. Escobar won't get 2 months if he continues to struggle like this. Not with how much the Mets seem to believe in Baty. Nido probably gets 2 months, or longer. Escobar is one to watch. Baty could take his job in maybe 1-2 weeks. It wouldn't shock me if it was that quick.
They also have Danny Mendick in Syracuse who could slide into a reserve role.
No ears were harmed. Carry on with your Sunday afternoon
