PG: The Tyler Kolek Game

Kolek was ok in the first half taking advantage of a streaky Mikal who couldn't miss. In the 2nd half the Knicks went cold and Wizard started playing like a real NBA team Kolek looked overmatched. Smart saw bbq chicken and was abusing him.

Kolek has nice skills like on the and 1 layup but I don't know if it's enough to overcome his small body and lack of athletism. Even Ron Baker seemed stronger iirc. We'll get a chance to see what he can do until the other guys get back, so this is his opportunity.

Smart was making tough shots that you'd let him take anytime. Kolek looked unusually polished for someone who was completely denied development time. If he was properly played he would likely made all rookie team

I see we're doing Frank all over again where if he only got a steady 30 minutes every night next to starters and never got benched and never got yelled at and the coach gave him regular hugs he would be Magic Johnson but mean old Thibs hates him. He was literally Larry Bird last night and won us the game.

I understand pushing back on some of the extreme takes on Kolek after 1 game but calling him bbq chicken in the 2nd half seems to be a bit much imo.

He played less than 4 minutes in that stretch at the end of the 3rd/ beginning of the 4th before Thibs yanked him. These may be the only 2 actions he was involved in on defense.

I don't see bad defense and at least one of those shots from Smart was pure luck. Neither of them are shots you worry about Smart making most games.

Kolek was hidden off of the ball most of the game and I don't remember him being involved in any other of the other actions on defense in that period. The team also gave up a few 2nd chance baskets in that period which Kolek did not play a role in.

On offense the team struggled to get anything going but outside of a Mitch layup Kolek was the only one to score with a difficult and-1 basket in the paint. In that period of time Hart barely grazed the rim on a three, Shamet missed another wide open three, KAT dribbled the ball out of bounds, Mitch fumbled the ball away after Kolek drew the attention of the defense getting into the paint and OG was blocked driving into traffic in the paint.

Did I miss something in the 2nd half or are you talking about garbage time?

TJ McConnell is a damn good comparison for where he is right now. And I think his court vision is even better than TJ's with a higher upside to his offensive game as well.

TJ is stronger and more athletic. Kolek seems to be more in the Calderon vein if we must compare him exclusively to White players.

Apparently you do Frank all the time, the amount of trauma that dude caused you and the resulting impact it had on you needs to be studied. Every thread you mention him, so I had to check and of course you were comparing Deuce/Grimes to Frank the same way you're doing now with Tyler.

I doubt a different coach would have done a much better job with this roster and all the injuries. The biggest problem has been at pg and the season was lost when Rose was gone. Combine that with Kemba being washed, Randle taking a step back, RJ's mystery illness that made him terrible the first half of the season, constant center injuries, Fournier's lack of defense, Deuce being Frank on offense, its hard to blame it ALL on Thibs even though he's had his issues too.

The only thing that matters is Tyler Kolek is a good basketball player. What level of accomplishment he can reach is an unknown.

Any comparisons are for style and type purposes, not an assertion of the level they will achieve. Saying you think he could average over 10 assists a game as a starter is speculative, not a given.

Case in point is Grimes whose game is still very similar to Klay, but at no point did anyone say he had achieved Klay's level, merely that his game resembles Klay.

But you can't say that around anyone who wants to troll, because any comparison you make they will immediately stuff it into their troll's bag of receipts.

The war was over when the Whistleblower said his peace. I'm just illustrating why someone would look at the game Kolek had and try to throw water on it. I just like getting things out in the open, I address the root cause and not argue the symptom because that's a waste of time. We're all adults right?

Yea, I didn't really take those seriously and of course there are always crazy comparisons. But yea, Thibs is way too rigid and always a double standard when it comes to youth vs vets.

In the end just play the dude. There's not much to lose, and could be a lot to gain if we have another rotation player.
