this **** is really crushing and whats hard is without sports around many of us lack an escape. i know this is the internet and you're not suppose to be "soft" here, but i hope if any of you are struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts during this that you find the support you need. If you don't have the family or friends to talk to there is this:
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255
hopefully this passes soon and we can all go back to making fun of DSjr broke ass J

No doubt the Chinese mishandled it in the early going. Did they do any worse than the American government though?
They mistakes were different, but is the result any different?
At least the Chinese showed it can be beat. If the US had come first the panic level there would be even higher.

German customs apparently stopped trucks from illegally sending out great amounts of medical equipment produced by the company 3M. Supposedly stolen on behalf of US and Swiss governments.

Germany's trying to ban all exports of medical equipment out of the country at the expense of other countries who are in dire need of them. EU once again proving itself useless in times of crisis.

They just provided Italy with the biggest delivery of medical equipment registered so far in an unprecedented act of solidarity.

What's more, IIRC there are much bolder examples for protectionist politics in the Western World than Europe. What goes around comes around, I guess.

You just offered help to those who are dealing with clinical depression while simultaneously deriding someone who's been dealing with clinical depression (due to the death of his stepmother).

Here's a link to a PDF written by a consultant/coach called
Scary Times Success Manual: How To Be A Leader When Times Get Tough
https://pardot-resources.s3.amazonaws.com/download/ScaryTimesSuccessManual.pdf
It is short, maybe 2 pages of bullet points. I found it an appropriate response and it may be helpful to some of you

I have a feeling this pandemic is going to kill globalism as we know it. It shows how vulnerable countries are, if they rely in import.

There may be less "globalism" but it's never going away.
Humans have been trading goods for forever.

Yeah, everything playing right into the eco-warriors scenario.

Yeah, there is a stark difference between traiding goods and completely outsourcing manufacture of essential things to faraway countries. The whole world relying on Chinese import of the main ingredients for pharmaceuticals just showed how dangerous a practice it is. Same with masks, as they have just entered the list of essential things.

Tech will mature and develop to the point some aspects of the supply chains can become more localized. 3D printing is one example.
However, some of that still may require private capital and/or govt capital to be put in place, so re-fitted local infrastructures will evolve at different paces depending on the wealth and resource of each region and how anticipatory different leaders are.
Many countries will manage those adaptations while disadvantaged countries may not without international aid. Africa comes to mind as being extra vulnerable to supply breakdowns in the face of ongoing climate change and population disruptions. Famine seems like it could grow there as the ability to absorb refugees becomes less likely.
Countries like America still has advantages over time in the form of arable land and agricultural capacity. We don't have to import very much to put food on the table if our national policy shifts more towards self-sufficiency.

Don't live in NYC anymore but I've been listening to the press conference and this dude had a completely different tone yesterday. Today it's a whole different vibe, things are changing rapidly. Yesterday it was about no lockdown, people have their freedom. Today, it's an enforcement with legal penalty if violated.
NYC is about to go into lockdown and soon other states will follow

Maryland basically is on lockdown now. All stores are closed at 5 PM unless it's for medical purposes, groceries or something.

I'm talking about civilians are going to be questioned on the streets about their purpose for being in the public and if they don't have a good enough reason for being out then the authorities are being given the green light to take action

I know it’s going to happen, I wish it would start sooner than later. Might as well start it if they know that’s where it’s going. No reason to delay it.
Edit—oh I didn’t realize that he put it in place this morning. Good.

"Soft" martial law comes first.
I think the 2nd kind comes later.
