So, Zion's best scoring year was the only year he averaged more total touches per game than Ingram? You can't say Zion has the ball more than Ingram, the numbers quite literally say Ingram touches the ball more than him in the frontcourt, in time of possession, even down to dribbling the ball more. The only season Zion had more total touches was in 2020-2021 and even then he had the ball less in the front court. Ingram quite literally cannot play off the ball, I'm not even sure what team would maximize him. Zion being on the ball makes sense if he can't shoot, you put shooters around him and let him create more, which is what their plan was with Herb and Trey. If Ingram has the ball what use is Zion if he can't shoot?
I couldn't imagine drafting a guy 1, seeing him score 27ppg on just 34 touches in the frontcourt, then looking over and seeing a guy have 40 front court touches for 23.8ppg and being like "Yeah, that works, we need more of that" no, you get rid of the dude that has the ball more than the more efficient player and you start giving that guy those touches.
Zion's numbers were up that year but it didn't impact winning. They went 31-41 and finished 11th in the conference. The Pelicans realized that and that's why they reduced his role since then and they've made the playoffs twice. They were never good with Zion being the main hub.
Reduced role? He's been hurt. Picking Ingram over Zion would be like the Warriors picking Ellis over Curry. They have the internal data, they have seen both, they want the show to be run by Zion, which is why every move they've made the last year has been about him.
