Good, they just bury themselves. He is inconsistent.

30M is a really good number for what he brings with the cap rising. He was a FA at a good time for the Pacers.

Right now, no one good has cap space so there is nowhere to go for the payday unless you are looking for that first big boy contract (looking at you Grimey)

Probably not since the first game we played OKC this season and we ran one of the best looking motion offense I’ve seen for 24 mins of the game

The Knicks scored on backcuts plenty of times this year.

Thibs needed to go but let's try and keep it truthful.

The offense needed more motion and cutting, but between Thibs, KAT and the Villanova guys, there was a decent amount of cutting.

Could there be more? More movement? Better plays? More 3s? Sure. But people are starting to act like the Knicks played 4 corners

It is often easier to score after a backrub

The term, into the luxury tax has been around a while now. But the newer terms first and second apron, how do they relate? Where will Indy be with $30 M for Turner? And will they have to lose some depth pieces to make room?

think of it like tiers with different outcomes. i don't understand them all, but they are to prevent big teams from being able to say "we can eat the tax, so we'll do whatever."

crossing the luxury tax alone is a financial penalty. first apron comes with some additional roster move restrictions. second apron comes with even more that can also include a hard cap and loss of draft capital if crossed in consecutive seasons.

as for turner, given that they have been careful not to even go into the tax at all, it's possible we're talking just luxury tax here. first apron at worst. i can't imagine they intend to go into the second apron right away. but, they could. they're in the finals. win or lose, they might see the next few years as a window worth the penalties.

i would honestly throw your question into a LLM and see what it says. would probably be a good starting point. google now has gemini built in for free. bing has had copilot/OpenAI in there for a while. we can come into these conversations with a lot more baseline information than ever before, which is fun.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/IND.html
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/apron/_/year/2025

just adding turner's $30m (or more) alone would put them at $198m with 12 roster spots and some cap holds. that's expected to be first apron territory next year. i'd assume mathurin and sheppard's options get picked up. probably walker too. bradley might be a cap casualty, but would also represent a cap hold going down to 11 players under contract. so they'd likely have to be very cautious to not go into the second apron right off the bat. outside of a couple of role player trades or consolidations that dilute depth, i'd think they're largely running it back and continuing to grow -- as they've done nicely since the siakam deal.
RIP magnumt

thanks for everything, thibs.

They should've traded Garland for IB last offseason.

With Turner's new contract, they'd be at roughly $200 mil for 2025/26 season. I think someone is going to sail in and offer Mathurin a big contract in which I don't think the Pacers will match. And if he signs an extension, I can't imagine him making anything less than 20-25 per. Pacers might have 1 more season with this core and be in the luxury before they have to think about restructuring slightly.

Can't believe we let him prematurely do the choke sign game 1 and ended up losing the series

I like Turner. He'd pair well with KAT. But even with the cap rising, saying Indiana will really only comfortably operate in the luxury for at least a season. They're going to lose a bench player this season, and next offseason, they have a couple of key guys that might not stay. Mathiun is all but gone. No way they resign him for 25-30 while having Turner making that amount, too.

I mean the idea with some of these deeper teams who have their picks is that they can function like a baseball team and call someone up from the minors for a role. Mathurin is a luxury on that team. If they trade him for a future non-lotto first they can take and develop a new wing and place someone like Ben Sheppard and that weird mustache of his in a rotation role. Keep the pillars, change the curtains.
