He plays the same position as Brunson aka our best player and guy the team is slowly becoming built around.
He isn't a consistent + defender.
Hornets are building around him.
Other teams would offer more in a trade for him.
We don't need any Ball's in NY

While Lamello isn't perfect, he's pretty great at what he does well, score and assist. I think he's a taller Haliburton once you put him on a good team. And yes other teams would offer a lot , but I'd much prefer him over Donovan Mitchell.

He may be very good, but we should not have both he and Brunson.

Right but imo that would be a way better alternative than Donovan Mitchell and Brunson. We address two major weaknesses that Spida wouldn't, passing/assists and backcourt size.

I really like Hunter for this team, but I think he wants to be higher on the totem pole. In Atlanta he's behind Trae and Dejonte, and here he'd be behind Randle and Brunson. He'd be a better third option than RJ though, simply because he's more efficient.

RJ for Deandre Hunter. I believe Hunter can break out like Mikal in a bigger role.

Hunter really isn’t that good. I’ve been watching him since he played with Reddish and just like the latter, Hunter looks impressive at first, but then he coasts and is inconsistent and ineffective and not the defender or rebounder he should be with that frame and also not quite the shooter you’d like him to be. I would never make that trade.

I proposed Randle for Hunter (or Bey) and Jalen Johnson. We get two younger prospects that can play PF/SF and they get more veteran talent to add to their "win now" team...

This is going too far man. Hunter is 26 and he’s really not a player known for his effort. The guy coasts thorough games and his rebounding barely edges Obi Toppin‘s. He cannot create for others, is not a great defender and not close to being an all star. This is an empty stats guy who doesn’t even fill the stats sheet so you shouldn’t dump Randle, who’s also just 29, for him. Bey is a bench player for them. You want to get younger? Trade for real prospects. It is not going to happen though, since we signed a nice PG to take us to the playoffs. You know that.

It would sure be an interesting guard set. We could stagger them as well and have a clear bench advantage constantly.
I wonder if they and their agents would agree to it?

If they both played together and were never staggered, could Melo guard the 2 well?

I like the idea of new pre migraine RJ at the 2/3 and moving Randle for a better fit.

We have a team full of guys who want the ball and want to be a higher usage. Hart was a squeaky wheel, so his shots upticked, Grimes is complaining so maybe sees an uptick, IQ needs his shots to justify his 6 man of the year race.

As we look to consolidate and bring in guys who are willing to play a smaller role, who are not out there trying to prove they are a future all-star. The Villanovians, I think, will be fine. Brunson has his role, Hart is going to get playmaking opportunities, Dante seems to shoot with a green light, but will pass if he doesn't have a clean shot.

McBride is someone who could have a role in the future, we have a top point guard in Europe who needs to come over or be dealt as an asset. There are teams that could use IQ, possibly even including the Hawks (though that would be hard to watch).

Grimes, IQ, Fournier + knicks '23, and one from the stash (not DAL), for Hunter and Bey. They could easily siphon off grimes and spin some of the other parts to get a bigger fit. Toronto won't deal with us, but I could see them sending Siakam to ATL should they be able to obtain the assets.

I think your deal probably works because it seems Atlanta wants to get rid of his salary. That said, I'd rather keep IQ and move RJ. Not that they'd want RJ. And also, Hunter is a nice piece, but we have to stop assuming every deal requires us giving up two first round picks. They're basically dumping him; we don't have to give up firsts for him, especially if they're getting cheap, young players in IQ and Grimes.

IQ is one of, if not my favorite, knick(s).
He is a tweener guard not really capable of running the point for prolonged periods of time. He plays with great defense intensity and is at his best when is plays as a scorer rather than when he becomes passive.

If he starts at the 2, then we have to trade RJ for a more reliable 3-D role player. RJ is doing well on both ends getting the #2 assignment on the wing, sometimes the #3 if he guards a SF when Grimes takes the point and Brunson takes the 2.

I think this speaks to that I would agree in general trading RJ is probably better than trading IQ, but we also happened to have signed, via FA, his replacement AND have a guy who can step in at 3rd string (McBride). We don't have the same pipeline at wing. Right now we have Jeffries as the only wing on the bench.

I want to be aware of the pipeline, be aware of who needs shots, who is seeking paydays etc.
We are nearing the end of Grimes and IQ on affordable contracts.
Hunter is affordable, fits, and fills a lot of holes (phrasing).
I agree that picks are thrown around a lot, but at this time Hunter should be sought after because he does something that all teams need.

Hunter projects as a very solid 3&D 3/4 in this league. Even if he's your 6th man type backing up both those spots, he's not a bad fit in that role (which is something we need). Jalen Johnson is a solid young PF prospect. He may not become All-NBA like Randle, but he's already shown some nice upside worth exploring. This type of trade is more about getting rid of Randle for decent return and more depth. And we know Atlanta loves them some Randle.

Fournier and picks MAYBE but RJ is way better than Hunter.

While we are at trades that will never happen:

Knicks 2024 + 2026 unprotected + 2028 top 5 protected + 2025 + 2027 pick swap + Dallas FRP + Milwaukee FRP + Detroit FRP + Washington FRP + Fournier + Barrett + Grimes

for

Bridges and DFS

Brunson/IQ
Bridges/DD
DFS/Hart
Randle/DFS
Mitch/Isiah

7 FRPs (two unprotected) + 2 swaps + RJ + Grimes is a steep price but having Bridges and DFS on the wings along with Brunson/Randle could put us into serious contention. Unfortunately I still think the Nets would say no.....

Knicks monitoring the trade market for a star player is like OJ still looking for Nicole Brown’s unaliver.

I like what Donovan does enough to want to see it in NY, plus he is a NY guy, a Mets fan, and all that would be fun.

From a basketball sense, I realize neither is a very good option. Now if we can get him at a relatively low cost... then idk... I think we'd have to figure out a way to make it work.
