That just summed up every Melo debate we had on this forum using a conversation with JVG.

And every debate on this forum ends up with the same conclusion that JVG drew, even by those who are anti-Melo: “I can’t see how they wouldn’t be better with him,” he said.

I trust Donnie not to give up 2 out of Chandler, Gallo, or Fields. I think we will only give up one in a trade (and obviously Chandler if it goes to FA), and Donnie will stand firm with that position. Denver is probably holding up the deal hoping we'd blink and give up Fields, but Donnie won't budge.

I really hope he comes here.. We have to get him in a trade fellas, we need a center for the MLE and we should resign chandler to be a dominant 6th man when melo comes here. Trade them Gallo and 1st round pick. Its better then waiting for Melo to become a free agent and having to renounce Chandler and lose our MLE.

PS. another thing we dont need again is over over 1000 pages of speculation of a player coming to NY and then ending up somewhere else. I really hope he comes here

Bingo. That summarizes it perfectly I think. The key is keeping 2 of those 3 players and the preference would be to move Chandler. Chandlers role is not only replaced by Melo but dramatically improved. Gallo is a better shooter than both, is showing some facilitating skills, taking it to the hole very effectively and plays great D. I think we would see more consistency from him with the trade situation resolved. He compliments a lineup with Melo better than Chandler. I feel comfortable Donnie will do the right thing here.

I think immediately after that, when he looks off camera at someone with that " I'ma whoop somebody's ass when I get outta here" face is just as funny.

A few points:

1. I think Gallo is an untouchable in the eyes D'antoni and Walsh in any 'Melo deal. The reason is that Gallo not only provides that constant 3-point threat to spread the floor for Amare, but because Gallo is tied to D'antoni at the hip because of their history together and D'antoni's relationship with Gallo's dad. He wouldn't do that to his old friend.

2. I believe Walsh when he says he can get a 1st rounder when/if needed. Walsh has yet to outright lie to the fans/media. He's usually very straight forward and tells you exactly how it is.

3. I think Chandler is the centerpiece to any Knicks' offer to Denver for several reasons. Chandler is a RFA at the end of the season and he's playing practically the same spot 'Melo would play for this team so with the trade, you upgrade that SF/PF hybrid position. Lose Chandler now or lose him in the off-season... it's really the same thing.

4. I think Donnie has offered Chandler + Randolph/1st and Denver is asking for Fields to be included as well. Fields is the sticking point. Donnie may counter with Douglas but Douglas is not Fields... we all know that. I don't blame Denver for trying to get as much as possible for Anthony and I don't blame Donnie for playing hard ball. This is the high-stakes poker game being played behind closed doors. I think, in the end, Donnie may bite the bullet and part with Fields, but I think there's a good chance Donnie will substitute other assets in place of Fields to sweeten the pot. Another 1st (2114?) or Douglas and 2nd plus $3M cash. I think Donnie will buy a future 1st with cash and a 2nd/Walker and I think the deal gets done some time in January or February and looks something like:

'Melo + Carter for Curry + Chandler + Randolph + Douglas + 1st + $3 Million

The Nets won't trade that much if he doesn't extend with them. Their offer as a rental will be MUCH lower. -Jitpal

I buy that and I do those deals. Gallo and Fields fit better than Chandler would with Melo and Amare. The key is being able to keep them, which is why I think this deal hasn't happened yet. -Jitpal

If we have to include Fields then Randolph stays.

Will/Fields/Curry(exp - 50% paid)/Azabuke(exp - ins will pick up 80%)/1st rnd pk

for

Melo/Carter

PG: Felton/Carter
SG: Melo/Douglas
SF: Gallo/Walker
PF: Amare/Randolph
C: Mozgov/Turiaf/Williams
Karl Anthony-Towms

There goes my hero. He's ordinary.

Some excellent points, but I disagree with #1. Gallo's name has been in almost every rumored Melo offer, so I don't see any evidence to suggest Walsh wouldn't trade him because of D'Antoni. If we were going to run our team that way, then Patrick Ewing Jr. would still be here.

Also, for #3, keep in mind that DEN could lose Chandler for nothing at the end of the season as well, and he has been quoted as saying he doesn't want to go to Denver. I wonder how much value they are placing on a guy who might not re-sign there.
