New Anthony Randolph Mix: What's his potiential?

He represents the new generation of basketball players who are muti-talented, reminiscent of Kevin Garnett when he first came into the league. My man can do it all. He is a quick, dribbling, dunking machine; creating his own shot, mid-range shot, and ofcourse bringing the defense in one package.

Dribbling

Anthony has the dribbling ability of a point guard. At 6’10” he can dribble between two defenders and push the ball up the floor. Whether his man is trying to apply pressure or not. It’s no problem. His ball control is top notch.

Even though he likes to go left he can dribble with his left or right hand. His handling is a skill that some point guards at the NBA level still have not mastered. Randolph has the ability to dribble between his legs, behind his back, going left and right, and use his killer crossover to leave his man dazed.

Scoring

Randolph can take almost any opponent off the dribble. Whether he’s using his jab step or his crossover dribble, he can get it done. He also has a nice baseline shot from midrange that he uses when his opponents play the drive.

His mid-range shot is good and he can post up. While on the flip side, he is limited to shooting from the midrange area and he needs to get stronger if he wants to be taken seriously in the low box.

The bulk of his game is based on pure speed and athletic ability. His first step off the dribble allows him a hard cover for anyone. Not to mention, if you can’t stop him off the dribble then defending him is a long shot.

Once he’s up in the air for a dunk or a layup just consider it an automatic point. You name any superstar player and he will tell you that it is impossible to stop Randolph once he is up for the dunk. The best strategy for anyone guarding him is to just foul him. He is a monster on the break and he can handle the fastbreak all by himself.

Passing

This is an area he needs to work on. Even though he is a gifted passer he does not always share the ball. This can be a problem at times.

Defending

Anthony Randolph is one of the better defenders in the league. On defense he is the new Marcus Camby. He has the ability to get 2 blocks a game and 1 steal, plus he can guard 4 positions (pg, sg, sf, pf) . However, he has a tough time dealing with players that are bigger and stronger than him.

So if you are wondering if he can he play the center position full time, the answer is no. I don ‘t think he is ready for that just yet. He needs to bulk up and gain weight for that to happen.

The main thing that is stopping Randolph from being a superstar is his decision making. A player can have all the skills in the world but if their decision making is poor they will not achieve their goals. That is the difference between someone like Dwyane Wade and Ricky Davis. They both are skilled players, however only one is considered a top player in this game.

Too many times I have seen Randolph take the wrong shot or make the wrong move. However, he has the mind not to stop until he becomes one of the best players in the league. At age 21 Randolph has a large amount of time to improve.

Will Randolph become the next Kevin Garnett, Marcus Camby, or Lamar Odom? It's all up to him if he can bulk up and improve his decision making on the court.

How good do you think he can be?

Really good. Its just a matter of staying healthy.

I think he can be a top 10 player in the game. Now that is if he reaches his absolute ceiling (you can say the same for many players and most dont) but there is no denying that ARs mix of size, athleticism, and ball handling ability is special. I mean he handles like a PG as you said. Some big men can handle the rock, see Gallo, but AR is straight nasty with it. Plus he said his jumper has gotten light years better (his own words) so if he can show a respectable jumper how are defenses going to play him? I mean thats scary a player his height and athleticism being able to handle like a PG and also hit a jumper. Thats unguardable.

Really his biggest issues are just staying healthy and maybe adding a little more weight, just enough to be able to bang a little in the paint ala Camby/Tyson Chandler/KG size.

This is why my sig says I dont want to make any trades yet. I want to see what we got here because I think AR, Gallo, and to a lesser extent Chandler and Walker can really be something for us. I understand some want to go with the proven talent in Melo and Paul but I just have a really good feeling about our team. All of our young guys have great work ethics and good heads on their shoulders. I want to see what they can do because the sky is the limit, corny or not.

Hi everyone. back from a vacation from posting due to family health issues that are now resolved. basketball seemed so unimportant.

Great mix Big C, as always. I'm really excited about Randolph. Although his game isn't the saem, he reminds me of Camby at that stage of his career. Lots of potential, too skinny, history of not being able to stay healthy. I can't wait to see him running the floor with Gallo, Felton, Amar'e and Chandler.

I hope everyone is well. It's nice to be back. So much to talk about :)

Excellent points. I would really have to see CP3 play before I risk the farm for him. We still haven't seen how Felton looks in this system.

Randolph is going to be a beast if he gets real minutes.

Welcome back. I'm glad your family health issues are resolved.

I think at worst Randolph can become Camby which is a good thing. The difference is Randolph can score and dribble like a guard.

Another great mix, Big C. Like BTD said, I think AR can be a mix of Odom and Camby, he just has to stay healthy. That's the biggest thing that could hold him back.

Awesome mix thanks. I think I'm most excited about his ball handling ability. It gives me a rush seeing him handle it like that.

You dont have to be sorry at all...IM100% with you, AR and Gallo for me I dont want to get rid of at all there would have to be an over whelming deal for me to trade them, I really believe both of them in this system can be special players not to mention i also think that they really compliment eachother well also...when we got AR i was so amped cause i know what he can do if he stays healthy and this is the first year the knicks have talent to where i think we can really do some damage this year and make some headway and surprise a lot of people...

Thank you. This is what I have said for a while. When this whole CP3 rumor came up, people thought I was crazy for saying I wouldn't trade Gallo and Randolph for him. I believe we have two special players and in the end, I feel we would regret trading them. Let's just wait and see how they play this season.

I would not trade Both

I understand trading Randolph because he is a LSU guy but I think Gallo, Randolph and Amare has the potential to be a top3 forward combo in the League

The guy is easily a foward. Idk why people list him as our center.

These are two players that we definitely would regret trading. If people are still going nuts for Paul, they should at least wait and see how Felton does. I am not saying he is as good as Paul, but he still could be very very good for us in this system.

I don't think he should play center. At times he can, but he really needs to play at forward.

He reminds me a lot of Odom, better defensively, but he has the potential to be the rich man's Odom. Unfortunately right now, like Odom he is inconsistent and sometimes you have to question his b-ball IQ, but he has a ridiculous amount of talent.

While he has all star potential, in the short term, I wonder how he will do as a 6th man ala Odom.

Don Nelson is a crazy old man, but Randolph comes with the baggage of having been benched last season for immaturity and then dumped for David Lee. To me, the real question is whether D'Antoni can handle Randolph in a way that best develops his ridiculous skill.
