Elephant in the room-- why isn't Melo on LBJ?

It is an absolute travesty that Carmelo Anthony was not guarding Lebron James yesterday for most if not all of the game. A top five player in the league goes to his coach and demands that assignment. If a rickety 34-year old Pierce can do it then so can a 27-year old Anthony. Offense can come and go but defense is the backbone of winning on the playoffs. Does anyone want to claim that Melo needs to conserve his energy for the offensive end? Phoooey
It's a bad sign that Woodson-- apparently known as a defensive coach and lover of isolation ball-- shied away from this issue, placing an undersized and mentally-weak defender like Smith on Lebron James.
If Anthony isn't up in Lebron's grill Monday then Woodson hasn't earned a contract for next season.

Anthony started the game on LeBron and quickly got called for a foul. Maybe Woodson didn't want Melo to get into foul trouble and took him off LeBron.
What Melo really needs to do, more than guard LeBron, is make shots. The Knicks aren't going anywhere will Melo shooting 0-7 to start games.

Yeah...I'm pretty sure he was. The only times he was not was when he either a) was not in the game or b) was forced to switch with Shump.

Probably to keep Melo from tiring out. Miami did the same thing against Melo during the regular season. Battier had him through the first three quarters, then LeBron switched onto Melo for the fourth.

offense can come and go but defensive effort is the only constant player has. he wasn't guarding lebron nearly enough and what little time he spent on lebron the effort was not there. that has to change, especially that shumpert isn't there.

We also went small with Amar'e at the 5 and Mel at the 4 at times because Chandler caught a couple of early fouls and he was clearly drained... I saw for a period there Melo was guarding Joel.

Wrong
The only thing he wasn't doing yesterday was knocking down shots. Everyone was saying how he was playing well defensively and passing the ball. He had 10 boards in the limited time he played

it's not that melo plays bad defense, it's that he doesnt play any defense. Not sure if he'll ever change this. Pierce didnt start playing defense till around age 28 too, so u never know.
