Amare will have his best defensive season next year

Y'all can go ahead and bookmark this one.

Amare has all the tools to be a great defensive player, but he spent the majority of his career straight out of high school under 'antoni.

http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/20 ... t-defense/

Stoudemire doesn’t argue that his reputation as a poor defensive player was well deserved and seemed to suggest that D’Antoni was indirectly responsible. ‘It was fair,’ he said. ‘I was never taught defense. I just never was taught it in high school and also in the NBA.’ Stoudemire added that prior to his final season with the Suns ‘I took it upon myself to get better defensively’ and that Phoenix head coach Alvin Gentry was responsible for that new outlook. ‘I’ve got to give it to Alvin Gentry,’ Stoudemire added. ‘He really implemented some strategies that were helpful to me. I took what I learned last year and carried it over to this year.’’

Remember this gem? ...and how Stoudamire came into his first season in NY, fresh from Alvin Gentry's tutelage, with a sharper defensive focus, blocking everything that came in the lane until he reverted back to his old ways the longer he worked under d'antoni, again?

Well, based on the improvement Melo showed defensively under Woody, this is a pretty easy prediction to make. Give Stat a training camp, a full season relatively healthy, and some consistency to work with Woody and Chandler he'll do his best work on D, so you guys can stop hating on him. Mark it, b*tches.

Melo gets the rep as a bed defender because he doesnt try..but when needed, he can asbolutely step up

STAT, aside from the occasional blocked shot or 2, has always been a mediocre defender...he just doesnt get it :dontknow:

I expect him to improve as well, he really has no choice...but it wont be anything dramatic

No you didnt. Bomb bout to go off.

I think STAT will improve too but I keep quiet on him.

The problem with Stat's defense is that it's not an attitude problem. He is just so stiff and lost looking out there. Really can't imagine him improving, which is unfortunate.

EDIT: Before I get killed for "hating" on Stat I just want to qualify that he's still my favorite player on the team...

WTF? Don't you know we only post threads that bash Stat here.

Please delete this thread and replace it with one more suitable for this forum i.e:

1. Trade Stat for Andray Blatche
2. Stat doesn't care about his job because he took a summer class
3. Stat is a sociopath who is a destructive role model to our children because he wants to get married
4. Stat hates the Knick's fan base because he attended a basketball game.
5. Who dresses worse? Stat or Liberace.

We should all know better to take anything Amare says with a grain of salt. I don't remember Amare coming in to NY as a defensive beast and don't think he will improve much, especially coming off a back injury. I expect him to avoid contact more than ever, actually. Hopefully Woodson holds him and Melo accountable but I don't see it.

Having a defensive coach live Woodson can only help STAT, but the key to him having a productive year on either side of the court next year is him being healthy. He wasn't healthy at all this year and as soon as he started to get his legs back he threw out his back.

It's OK to be irrationally exuberant i.e. by the time Lin's career is over they will have constructed a gold statue of him in front of MSG but don't try to be guardedly optimistic i.e. one of the most physically gifted players in the league is going to be better defensively this year. You are just setting yourself up for the boo birds to do their thing.

Speaking of melo...Georg Karl never taught Carmelo defense. I really question Karls teaching skills. Dont get me wrong great coach but can he really develop championship caliber players and lead his team to a title? Well, hes got to try so maybe someday. But great coach for sure. One of the greatest offensive coaches in the NBA. Im sure hell eventually get a championship.

So maybe if Karl does the things championship caliber coaches do every game, then he could be a championship quality coach?

If he were our coach I would be bumming.

D'Antoni >> Karl.

And I'm not a D'Antoni advocate.
