Question, although extremely unlikely, is it possible for players such as Melo, Amare, Chandler to restructure their contracts to take less money to free up salary cap space? For example if they each take a 5m salary cut (like Lebron, Wade, Bosh) that would free up 15m which could be used to sign a player via free agency (Chris Paul) is that legal under the CBA?

He has an opt out clause...he'll opt out and resign for less...can't do what the OP is suggesting to an under contract player.

His deal is expiring, so he can take less on a new deal. If he wasn't expiring, he couldn't change the terms of an existing contract.

The answer technically is 'yes' (just not for the Knicks).

There are several things that would have to be in place for a player to renegotiate a contract "downwards", some that are beyond his or the teams control.

1. Players has to be willing to.
2. The contract to be renegotiated has to be at last 4 years long and cannot be renegotiated until after the 3rd year of that contract.
3. Contracts cannot be renegotiated if teams are over the cap.
4. Contracts that are re-negotiations without being extended can only result in an increase in salary.
5. Contracts that are re-negotiated AND extended can reduce the salary of the 1st year of the contract extension by 40% from the salary of last season before extension.

So what Nowitzki is talking about is to sign a contract extension with the Mavericks as part of a renegotiation of his contract where he'll get a new contract that starts at at least 60% of the last year of his old contract. So Nowitzki can theoretically help add roughly $21 million x 0.60 worth of cap space (around a additional $8.5 million or so of capspace) to the Mavericks by essentially extending his contract.

The Knicks are over the cap (see 3). So even if Anthony or Stoudemire (Chandler can't even agree to is since he's only been under contract 2 years...see 1), they can't. Even if condition 3 wasn't there, and all 3 guys agreed to one (assuming even condition 1 wasn't there), they still wouldn't be under the cap enough to land anybody really big.

There is no way Amare' will restructure his contract, same as Chandler.

For Stoudemire, certainly not this year as a 60% redo would lose him money while extending years of servitude. Chandler can't even if he wanted to since he's only been under contract 2 years. Stoudemire MIGHT be more receptive after next season since there would be a somewhat overall gain salary wise in a max renegotiation/extension for 60% of next years salary.

Knicks are stuck with Amare' just like Yankees are stuck with A-Rod.

I'm sure Amare can retire, sit out for a season and come back for cheap but he won't do that.
