The Phil Files: Inside the Mind of Jackson

Post#1 » by GONYK » Mon Jul 6, 2015 5:23 pm

Has anybody been reading the Phil Files series on ESPN NY? It gives a lot of perspective on Phil's routine and thought process. It was chronicling Phil at different points in the season, and getting his thoughts and reactions at that moment.

I think it's interesting because it's always easy to question something looking back, but to be able to catch his insights as they were happening is a different perspective.

Yea, with the Knicks sitting at 2-6 at that time, you can see that Phil accurately assessed the players, but still had some optimism.

I'm looking forward to the Phil File where he realized how much Iman and JR needed to go.

I want to draw attention to one line:

We really need Calderon to return ASAP. He shoots, pushes and finds, and has the experience to organize the triangle.

This is why the Knicks got Calderon - for his head moreso than his skill. I remember back to preseason the level of organization on the floor when he was on it vs. off of it. It's why he'll be on the team at the start of the season and will stay until one of the other guards - Grant or Galloway - is able to pick up the slack. Anyone that hopes/expects him traded this summer is probably out of luck.

Note - this is Jackson's thinking, not mine.

I really love that it isn't even hindsight in saying that Phil did a great job with Galloway. His preseason comments basically said that it was not a matter of if, but when Langston would be ready, and then in part 2 of this series he's very clear that Gallo was a priority because he was already NBA ready and they did not want to lose him. With other player comments he was a bit more unsure - he spoke about guys (like Wear for example) needing to improve/change in order to have a shot in the league - even though they made the NBA roster. With Gallo he nailed it right from the jump and he was totally right, even though he chose to send him to the D-League to start.

Another part. More great stuff! Phil showing a more hands on approach in this series

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13230528/the-phil-files-part-3-jackson-coach-steps-in

"Too many of these guys don't want to change the way they've always played ... running isos and screen/roles," he says. "We simply don't have enough talent to win playing that way. If we executed the triangle with a full commitment, and had the same attitude on defense, then we'd win our share of games. But that's too much work. Because they resist even trying these changes out, they're way too passive out there. We are robotic in our actions; I'm waiting for this team to start to play using this offense for the individual talents, but together.

"The entire mindset and culture around here has to be improved."

"I'm like a duck in the rain," Jackson says. "All that stuff just rolls right off my back."

This was huge, Phil understood in that moment if not before the whole team had to be broken down/apart and replaced.

Interesting that he picked out the issues with Deandre and the Clippers before any media members did and there was no mention of LMA.

Is Warkentien still with the team? There was no mention of him in either article.

First on his schedule is a daily meeting with general manager Steve Mills, assistant GM Allan Houston and Clarence Gaines, an advisor who worked alongside Jackson for all six of his title runs with the Chicago Bulls, to "get a read on what they see happening with the team and around the league."

he's around, but mainly for scouting and such. Gaines has the highest influence with Phil & Steve. The front office itself isn't full of Dolan/Mills cronies, so you don't have to worry about Mills doing anything else outside what Phil/Gaines tells him to do.

i know john gabriel has a big role with our team.

And now he is a gm a different ball game a job he has failed in so far..phil groupies wake up smh

But it's his team and I'm going to [be] totally hands-off. I'll be available only if he needs me."

Let this sink in people so the next time you're about to suggest Jackson is going to mentor a specific player you decide not to.
