Way Too Early 2016 FA/Trade Idea Thread
My assumption here is Kevin Durant does not sign with the Knicks next off-season. This likely means that we will do the team building approach once again. Based on this philosophy, which pieces best fit the puzzle based on what we have already?
I would also assume Arron Afflalo opts out of his contract as will numerous others due to the cap increase (keeping my fingers crossed Derrick Wiliams does the same thing, but I don't see it)
There is one guy I want a lot if he opts out and we go team build approach. That man is Pau Gasol. He has a respect for Derek Fisher that would translate into the locker room and has enough experience in the triangle offense to teach Kristaps Porzingis how to be most effective in the offense. We could also sign a second veteran big man to fill out our front-court like Chris Kaman to the minimum.
That would make our depth chart (If Derrick Williams opts in, Arron Afflalo opts out, and we keep the cap holds for Langston Galloway and Cleanthony Early):
C-Robin Lopez/Kyle O'Quinn/Chris Kaman
PF-Pau Gasol/Kristaps Porzingis/Derrick Williams
SF-Carmelo Anthony/Cleanthony Early/Thanasis Antetokounmpo
SG-
PG-Jose Calderon/Jerian Grant/Langston Galloway
With a lot of money left to blow on shooting guard, but not many elite options. Who fits in with that team best?
Jamal Crawford
Courtney Lee
O.J. Mayo
Arron Afflalo
Kevin Martin
Eric Gordon
Any other options you see as fits?

I know it's ridiculously early. This thread is more so for entertainment and fun than anything else to be honest. You can add a disclaimer to the subject if you would like.

Heh, I'm no mod (you couldn't pay me). I'm just having fun with you.
On topic, off topic. Too soon, too late. Hijacked, drifted. Religion, politics. Flame wars.
It's all good.

In my way too early scenario, I think splitting the cap space between Pau Gasol, Courtney Lee and Kevin Martin would be a solid start then sign Chris Kaman and a veteran shooting guard presence to the minimum (Leandro Barbosa or Jason Terry).

How do you dare to go against the esteemed great Stephen A-hole, who today set Phil up to fail if he doesn't land Durant and Kobe next year?
Actually, Gasol excites my basketball senses in a way nobody else does. If he knows what's good for him, he'll join his good friend Phil and his millions of supplicants, er, fans in NYC.

I'm not even gonna look at FAs, and I think I get where you're going with the Gasol thing (mentor/tutor), but I don't see any name there that moves the needle, IMO, not by themselves or grouped together.

Re: If No Durant (Most Likely): How Do You Build In 2016 Off-Season
Same thing they tried this offseason. Look to add the best FA and if he turns you down, move to the next best FA available? At the end of the day, the Knicks still just has just Carmelo Anthony from a star player standpoint. Hopefully Porzingis shows that he can develop into one. No one else on this team has star potential (sorry Galloway and Grant...and Thanasis...fans). They need top tier talent. Whomever can bring top tier talent would fit what they need and should be looking to add in the summer of 2016. So who's the next best FA after Durant? That would be the person to go after.
Would likely have to be UFA's since there's no real shot top RFA's (Andre Drummond is probably the best RFA now that guys like Davis and Lillard have extended with their current teams) will be able to leave their team for nothing but cash (Knicks have no real trade assets to get top RFA dogs via sign and trade assuming they want to keep hold of Porzingis).
So best UFA's? Conley, Noah and Horford probably make up the best UFA's after Durant. After that it's probably guys like Hassan Whiteside (assuming he can replicate last season) and Nicolas Batum. If they want to go with older guys that may be willing to sign short term deals then obviously you got Kobe Bryant and Joe Johnson. Beyond that? You start getting into the Ryan Anderson, Al Jefferson and (if he wears out his welcome in Clipland) Lance Stephenson range...guys that can be real productive in certain areas but that can blow chunks in other areas.
Considering that Noah's knees may be cooked and Conley is most likely going back to Memphis...Horford is probably the best option. the problem obviously is, Horford is probably best suited as a C/PF which, with the commitments to Porzingis and Lopez...and Anthony doesn't seem like a real fit...unless they look to deal one of the 3 current Knicks mentioned.
Basically...let's hope Durant decides to listen to SAS. You add Durant to Anthony and they can go as is into 2016-2017 as one of the top teams in the East.

You dont think Jerian has a chance to be a star? I think he has "Derek Harper" potential.

I was one of the first guys to hype Grant and, no. I don't think he has a realistic chance of being a star. I think he can turn into a very good player (on par impact wise as Jamal Crawford...just overall production, not talking exact gam per se, although there are some similarities...both tall point guards that can score with wiry athletic frames, Crawford better shooter, Grant probably better on the drive...a possible 6th man of year type) but a star? Not really (well not unless you felt that a guy like Crawford was a star in his prime...if so...then sure).

I never looked at Derek Harper as a star in the NBA. Above average and very serviceable, but not quite a star.

Yeah same here. Harper had some real nice seasons in the NBA, but never saw him as a star. If Grant can reach Harper level (or even Crawford level) I would be thrilled and it would have been a great pick.

Re: If No Durant (Most Likely): How Do You Build In 2016 Off-Season
90% of this answer depends on how KP looks
do we have a PF or not?
it also depends heavily on the PG position. Will Grant and Galloway be enough there?
assuming everything this year actually goes well and we want to take the next step, from playoff to contender, and its a one piece thing we are looking for then ...
Horford
Beal
perhaps Wade?
but thats if we are looking to land one big name not Durant and we are not looking to build more quality at multiple positions
dude, its just too soon

I think Crawford's piss poor defense kept him out of stardown, I think Jerian has a chance to be very good in that area. That's why I picked the Derrick Harper as a comparison. A near all star who plays like a true all star during the pressure moments.

I like Batum and Pau as targets.
