Because he can pitch long or short relief and start. Like Adam Warren. He's not great but he's versatile. They are both likely candidates to get replaced by better, younger guys in the minors once the Yankees are comfortable with them, probably next year. Even Cessa was getting more long relief opportunities, so probably not long for these guys.
Did you just compare Mitchell to Warren? Warren has been the Yanks most dependable reliever all year. Its obvious why Mitchell was in the game because it was 7-1 in the 9th, and he couldn't even get an out he's pathetic.
Warren's been great; he's the definite keeper of the two. I was just pointing out they both have the ability to pitch short, long and spot start. Someone was asking "why they keeping him?" He might be the weak link in the pen, but that's the reason they've held on to him so far. I would suspect it's not past this year as better arms come up.
