Let's just pray that his progression continues and this talk of improved defense really exists!

Shocking Atlanta wouldn't match that...definitely hope he really did change the way he played from his first go around in NY. If he did grow as a player and is more than just the one dimensional "shooter" that he was, it could work out ok considering he will be here for his prime to grow alongside KP, Willy and Frank. Have to hope now that the growth he showed last season continues and he becomes a top half of the league shooting guard.

Also hope that this move triggers at the very least a Courtney Lee trade. Makes no sense now to keep him with THJ on board.
All-Time Draft

PG- Oscar Robertson/Bob Cousy
SG- Earl Monroe/James Harden/Dana Barros
SF- Billy Cunningham/Michael Finley/Chet Walker
PF- Elvin Hayes/Dolph Schayes/Tom Chambers/Danny Manning
C- Walt Bellamy/Neil Johnston/Darryl Dawkins

Good, we got younger and added another perimeter threat. Big backcourt with THJ and Frank. Now deal Melo and Lee and let's go.

The real question is... What was Atlanta's price and how much did we overpay by? I think his actual price was around what Waiters' got and the Hawks would've definitely matched that. Then, we go in the $60 million range and I think it's possible that they match. But $71 million with a trade kicker. I really hope we don't regret this. On the bright side, at least players are signed for 4 years now instead of the 5-6 year contracts GMs used to hand out back in the day.

Here it is, welcome back Timmy! Light it up! Here's to more game winners to keep us out of the top pick!

Yep. Hope he can earn this deal. If not....20 mil per to trade him. The money really isn't as bad as people make it sound. His age fits the youth movement. I'm sure he will fit into what Jeff wants to do. He isn't an injury prone player.

Melo has to go. Then we will see what the cap really looks like. The sting will lessen considerably if we make a sound trade.

Baker/Frank/THJr/Lee/Dotson That's our BC right now. Youth movement in full effect with a solid vet on a good deal. I'm ok with that.

Atlanta was gonna offer 4/48 according to Zach Lowe, but I bet they would've been willing to match up to 4/60

just gotta hope he keeps improving

So I'm not sure why Atlanta told us early?

1. Being gracious and sparing fans the agony (their fans and ours)
2. They think we're really a**holes and wanted the news to get out
3. Woj has sources that are really leaking -- worse than in our government LOL
4. They needed to move on to make deals, so this was going to come out soon, anyway

Which of these is right? Another reason why?

His defense is much improved to the point where it at least is adequate now, he has a pull up shot, looks to pass more on the drive and can finish better. I think most people will be surprised with this signing. If THJ wasn't here before, most people would have a different reaction.

On the contract, yes it is an overpay, but that's what is needed to sign these guys away from their team as a RFA. You have to make it so they won't match, which means overpaying by 2-4M a year. Anything like 4 year, 60M they would've probably matched. Also when you consider it with how the contract would've looked before the cap went up, it isn't that bad:

In the end this move isn't just about the team, it's about making KP happy. Here is our 1st franchise type caliber young player in forever. Take some pressure off of him. And this is done with a young player, who could end up being an asset. We have a young core, with trade-able veterans in Lee, Melo, Thomas and O'Quinn to create more cap space next year. I'm happy with this move.
