The NBA is Ditching Conferences for Allstar Game

Post#1 » by King of Canada » Tue Oct 3, 2017 7:15 pm

Read on Twitter

The NBA All-Star Game will switch formats this season, as two captains will select the teams regardless of which conferences the players play in, the league announced Tuesday.

The players who win the fan vote from each conference will be the captains.

There will still be 12 players selected from each conference for the game in Los Angeles on Feb. 18. Five players from each conference will be selected as starters with fan vote being worth 50 percent, player vote worth 25 percent and media vote 25 percent. Seven reserves for each team will be picked by each conference's head coaches.

The new system will enable players from each conference to play against each other and allows current teammates to face off. Depending on the makeup of the teams, it is possible players voted in as starters may not actually start the game.

Last season, LeBron James led fan voting in the East and Stephen Curry had the honor in the West. All-Star voting will begin on Christmas Day.

Isn't this what the NHL does? Or do they do the "pick teams" but in conferences?

I wonder if they're trying to force scenarios where Lebron doesn't pick Kyrie, etc....

This is so beyond dumb and a stupid roundabout way of simply not blaming the players for not trying harder at least in the last 6 minutes of the 4th quarter. The stupid headlines of the draft are going to be so dumb and just tv fodder. I hate everything about this to be honest.

There is still no incentive for the players to actually care about the outcome and compete in this game. ASG will still continue to suck

This will actually create more problems than anything. Surprised the NBA can't see this.

When NHL did it, it was kind of sad too see the guy who was picked last.

At least one year they did a thing that who gets picked last also gets a car, so Ovechkin asked Captains to pick him last, so he can donate the car.

I can see the argument about conferences and division winners in the playoffs. East teams with worse records getting in the playoffs over better West teams. I can see scrapping that so....this is probably the precursor to that.

Sorry to say, I'm a traditionalist. I absolutely hate this. Stupid idea and takes away any meaning the ASG used to have

So let me get this straight. So once the 12 players are voted in from each conference (5 starters, 7 reserves via fan/player/media votes and head coach selection) then those 12 players from each conference go into one big pool with the two caps selecting teams playground style?

Is that correct?

If so, what goes on the front of the jerseys? Chase vs. Google? $$$
