Are there 3 teams definitively worse than we are?

Post#1 » by TheDavinciCHODE » Tue Oct 10, 2017 1:31 am

Reading through mock drafts, over/unders, and general league sentiment, I get the feeling that most people in the know consider the Knicks to be "meh, bad, but not really THAT bad".

Vegas has the over/under at 30.5.

Mock drafts have us picking 6th or 7th.

But....are there really that many teams worse than we are?

Are there even 3 teams definitely, without a doubt, worse than the Knicks?

I have been in favor of trading Melo and going through a full rebuild since Porzingis was drafted. Even before that actually, so I'm glad we are doing things the right way. Giving mins to our young guys, letting our franchise cornerstone be the focal point and growing through mistakes, trading away veterans for any future assets we can.

I have a feeling that Courtney Lee is going to be trade bait throughout the season as well.

Our roster isn't terrible, but the league has really improved. For example, remember when the Bobcats won like 9 games?

Or the Wolves won like 16 games or the Knicks won 17? Those were D-league rosters full of guys who aren't in the league anymore or are fringe players at best. Now the worst teams in the league, Atlanta, Chicago, and Brooklyn, have somewhat deep rosters with good talent. The Nets are projected to be horried and they have Russell, Lin, Mozgov, Carroll, Crabbe, and Hollis-Jefferson, all guys who are at least pretty solid players if not good.

So yeah, long winded way of saying, are the Knicks not one of the 3-4 worst teams in the league?

KP
Frank
THJ
Willy
Sessions
Noah
O'quinn
Thomas
Lee

all of those guys are solid players or better (except Noah) or at least probably will be (Frank) or at least not total trash. But how does our roster stack up against others?

I think these teams are better than the Knicks:

Sac
PHX
LAL
PHI
BKN
DET

and that leaves room only for Chicago, Orlando, and Atlanta...and even Atlanta has a solid system, good coaching, and some talented players. Maybe not more "talent" than the Knicks, but certainly more cohesion.

It's gonna be a close race for the bottom, but we are way more in this than people think.

I don't see us picking 7th again.

We’re barely a G-League team without KP and we’re FAR from a playoff team with him. Welcome to NY, Luka!

People tried to convince me last season that we had better talent than Philly... The way this broad overrated the talent on this team and made it look like Melo was holding us back was ridiculous

Maybe the Bulls. Maybe Atlanta, Indiana, Orlando? The Kings? There are more really bad teams out there than you'd think.

We may have more talent than a bottom 3 team, but we don't know how to maximize that talent.

Top 3 pick definitely in play all season unless KP goes nuclear.

Indeed, yes.

We have the anti-tank legend himself, Tim Hardaway, here to help too.

Bulls and Atlanta are worse on paper, but Bud will coach the Hawks to 30+ wins cause they're the Hawks

We're in that next level of Indiana and Orlando. Phoenix, Sacramento, and Dallas will be close, but they all have more NBA level players and exept Phoenix better coaching

Tankathon has us at #5, which is fair. I predicted somewhere between 6 and 9 after the Melo trade happened and I'm sticking to that

The Bulls is the only team that is clearly worse than the Knicks. They have less talent and play with the same level of cluelessness under their own version of Hornacek. The Hawks and Nets are both limited talent wise but they have much better coaching and a more capable front office. The Pacers have a little more talent, better coaching and they know how to over achieve.

That said while the rest of these teams will likely be tanking right as the season ends I expect the Knicks to go 3-2 to close out the season and go from possibly positioned with the 2nd worse record instead end up with the 6th worst record.

agreed

this team that you are seeing in preseason is not the finished product

we are a wild card

hopefully they won't improve too dramatically as the tank still needs to be fulfilled

Not for nothing but that Bulls team is turrible. Lavine is the only guy with notable proven talent and he's likely going to be out for half the season. You also forgot to include Kanter and Beasley on the Knicks side. Kanter would lead the Bulls in scoring and Beasley would be their starting PF and likely their 2nd best shot creator.

they also have dennis schroder...having a capable PG is everything in today's NBA...

Bulls have no PG...and less talent so the bulls will be worse but ATL and us will be fighting for that next spot.

Valentine vs Frank - NYK
Mirotic vs Beasley - CHI
Portis vs KOQ - CHI
RoLo vs WHG - Even
Holiday vs Kuz - CHI
Dunn vs Dotson - Even
Grant vs Baker - Even
Felicio vs Kanter - Even
Zipser vs MCD - CHI

I think we're just as bad
