How will the NBA adjust to defending KP?

Post#1 » by Icandoallthings » Mon Nov 6, 2017 3:33 pm

Create a defensive scheme to stop KP. I just want to know what you basketball heads think teams will throw at him.
Play devil's advocate. The NBA is a game of cat and mouse where stars in the NBA break out and go on crazy runs exploiting rule changes or their freak abilities. Once players and coaches take notice they adjust their defenses and try to force a player to their weaknesses. The elite players tend to find a way to overcome the defenses making teams adjust again and again.
KP's star is shining and will soon begin receiving that type of attention. A few examples i.e. Shaq-hack a shack; Kobe/Melo-force them to taking bad shots;Lebron-force him into being a jump shooter.
PRAISE BE KP! :D

I'd look at something like what the 2007 warriors did to Dirk in round one of the playoffs, guarding him with smaller players while sending another guard to double team at his blindside and they managed to frustrate him and cause him to turn the ball over

If that doesn't work he might just be unguardable

Biggest issue offensively wit him right now is not passing. When game is close, double from blind side and force into tougher shots. Hopefully he learns to recognize this and starts passing. If he adds that to his game, watch out...

I'd Double him on the catch, any later than that you messed up but the second the ball touches his hands you hit a hard double make him make a tough shot, an impossible dribble move or give the ball up.

There's a chance he just makes a ridiculous shot over the top but yeah he's 7'3 **** happens you live and you won't give up 40

That's just the starters. Wait til you see the bench!
Those last 70 seconds, Randle in a nut shell.

Awful 2 for 1 3PT attempt when we are up 2
Doesn’t close out on Sabonis --> open 3
Takes another side step off balance 3

We got sucked into the Randle vortex where all good feelings go to die.

Yep KP is going to have to become a better passer eventually. A lot of his passes are simply bail out passes. He misses a lot of open 3's cross court. With that being said he's making almost everything he puts up so it's hard to be mad at this, but eventually teams are going to send doubles and his next adjustment will be making the right read out of them. He did it at the end of last game when he hit Frank for the big 3. I'd like to see more of that.

My guess is they're going to send in a goon every time to beat the **** out of him. You'll see more dirty plays like Zaza's on kawhi, dahntay jones, Bruce bowen.

Those players teams have that they use to hurt other teams' best players

They can't. KP is too good. Too skilled, too aggressive now, too strong, too damn good.

More doubles and triples? Teams have been throwing smaller defenders at him but he just shoots right over them.

He's becoming one of those players that is unstoppable when he is on.

i dont think there really is a way. he is alwasys taller than his man guarding him, so he shoots right over, with the added weight and muscle, he's getting the shots off now. before he wasn't able to. if you put a big guy on him, he blows by, if u put a smaller defender he just rises up

if you send the double, hes a willing passer, but when the guy is on its almost over now

He might improve eventually pass this but I'd go with the idea people had to stop Dirk 10-15 years ago, put a smaller guy that has long arms and can stay with him and be physical, and is gonna force him to pass, Dirk improved a ton and became a really good passer to the point that wouldnt work, he also developed different shots to counter those guys, KP has some of the shots and can act as a rim-runner too, so that part is difficult, but at least you force him outside of his comfort area.

Other than that, limit his reception too, try to cover passes thrown to him and all that.

hes gonna have to work on his passing

once he get that he is gonna need to work on his passing and reposing after a pass

a lot of that will be strength conditioning and experience

but the rest of the league will try to put a center or long 4 on him
guys like AD or Cousins will be able to defend him
guys like Green or Towns

but the nba is moving away from big men and a guy like KP who can play the 4 at 7'3" is gonna give the league fits

much of it will continue to come down to our 5 defending on one end and being someone who must be defended by a big on the other end

they'll just start doubling him or putting their best defenders (Green, AD, Giannis, etc.) on him. The key though is to just run the plays and not settle on ISO KPs. Less ISO, the better the opportunity to score.

There will be guys in the league that make it tough on KP. Draymond is one that comes to mind.

If KP can hold his own against Dray, which he hasn't done yet, it means double teams is the only option.

Double team him and make him pass. Try and disrupt him. That's about it.

What did the Celtics do? I honestly don't remember. Besides whatever they did, a team should just focus on disrupting Jack and Frank. Kp isn't an issue if he can't get the ball.
