Dr. Detfink wrote:The #2 hitter gets the most RBI opportunities? Really. Then why didn't Joe Torre put Paul O'Neill and Tino Martinez #2 instead of Jeter for a good 10 years?!?!

The #2 slot is a contact hitter who knows how to advance the runner. This is assuming the lead off hitter has the highest OBP. THAT'S the job.

This is why Judge has a good OBP but his RBIs are ok. I think Nick Markakis has equal RBIs to Judge. Red Sawx JD Martinez has all around better numbers than Judge ESPECIALLY in RBIs and he does NOT hit #2 (hits clean up now that the Sawx added another bat).

Guys, this is baseball 101.

That's what I believe too.

Gardner gets on base and gives a good at bat. He's a good lead off hitter. Judge and Stanton should be in the 3-4 hole. Didi and Hicks are streaky but I don't know who else I'd put at 2 besides them. Maybe Gleyber down the road? I think he's potentially going to be a guy that can be their best overall hitter.

I'm just used to the way I thought a batting order used to be. Usually a fast guy with good OBP leads off, best contact hitter 2nd, best overall hitter/power hitting 3rd/4th. etc.

The reason why some fans might be opposed to batting A-A-Ron Hicks lead off is the fact, he's VERY streaky.

He was miserable in April and May before turning it on in June and July...Right now, he's hitting .185 in the last 9 games.

That said, he has the 2nd best OBP behind A-A-RON Judge.

A guy who is 3rd is Gleyber Torres...and now that the Yankees have a better sample size, I really think he should be #2. Gardner has the 5th best OBP and I wonder if it's time to drop him....but his left handed bat helps balance out a right handed heavy batting order.

Usually the Sawx try to pound the Yankees with left handed pitching. They didn't have to worry about that. The Righties killed them.

Didi is tapering off after an amazing June and July. Another guy who is VERY VERY streaky.

Here's my batting order:

CF Hicks (L): Despite hitting .185 in the last 9 games, still a tough out and he's got 2 home runs.
2B Torres (R): 3rd best OBP, maybe the best contact hitter on the team.
RF Judge (R): 137Ks are MUCH improved from last season.
DH Stanton (R): There is no other slot suited for him.
SS Gregorius (L): After a pitcher goes through this 1-4, Didi should murder the ball.
C Sanchez (R): had 124 MORE at bats than Tyler Austin but BA nearly .040 below his average.
1B Bird (L): Should benefit from a slot that he was hitting in the playoffs.
3B Andujar (R): Numbers wise he deserves better and at times (depending on the match up) can move him up in the order.
LF Gardner (L): #9 hitter is important because it can jump start a line up and if he gets on, the pressure is DOUBLE to handle the top.

Again, much how Girardi swapped guys around the order depending on the match up...injuries also play a factor. Without Judge and Sanchez I'd put it like this:

1. Hicks
2. Torres
3. Stanton
4. Gregorius
5. Bird
6. Andujar
7. Romine
8. Walker
9. Gardner

because derek jeter is 100x's better than both o'neill and martinez?

the #2 hitter WAS a contact hitter before teams got smart and realized lets just put our .500+ slugger #2 and our crappy contact hitter lower in order. "that's the job" what job, to make it easy on a pitcher?

the yankees are on pace to win 100+ games, i don't think judge's lack of rbi's is hurting the team.

you keep citing the red sox lineup even though you know nothing about them. their leadoff hitter is the 2nd best player in baseball and that's why he bats leadoff, not because he has a great obp  their current #2 hitter is having himself a pretty great season

.300 ba(you love this stat)
54 xbh which is a .512 slugging
67 rbi's(you also love this stat)

so to answer you question why jd martinez isn't batting 2nd, it's because the red sox have themselves another great hitter batting 2nd.

Like getting extra at bats is great but I feel it's more impactful to have Stanton or Judge up with runners on base than simply getting more at bats. I believe we both agree right? I'd rather have this batting order.
1) Gardner
2) Didi
3) Judge
4) Stanton
5) Gleyber
6) Andjuar
7) Hicks
8) Bird
9) Romine

Some guys can move around every now and then but 3rd-5th I is what I'd want to stay.

Any lineup with Hicks batting 7th is terrible I’m sorry. OBP and OPS matter more than .BA

So where would you bat him? Don't say its terrible without suggesting something better.

First or Second.

Getting caught in a Dr. Def argument is a black hole that you never want to find yourself in. I wish you the best in this quest.

I don't agree that it is the 2nd batter's job to advance the runner. 1) That's pretty much everyone's job on the lineup. I mean what is the 9th batter's job then ? draw some pitches and don't look like a fool ? 2) When you think about it, a good leadoff hitter has an OBP of about .350 to .400, so 65 % to 60% of the time, the 2nd batter is going come to bat with the bases empty (atleast in the 1st lining). Doesn't sound right to me to say that it is the 2nd batter job to advance the runners when more often than not, the bases are empty.

Chapman needs to get his $hit together unacceptable, you might get away with a lack of control against the Rangers, Mets of the world but you won't be able to get away with it against Redsox (as we all know) or the Astros.

I'd say 2nd. I was between having Didi or Hicks batting 2nd or 7th both are streaky.

One of the reasons why I liked the 2009 batter order is the fact, it was balanced top to bottom, so even if you batted 9th it mirrored the top of the order. NO PITCHER had a vacation at the bottom of the order. And so, I don't mind with a crowded bench if guys are shuffled here or there depending on the match up.

But yeah, I think Hicks is better served at the top of the order because even IF he doesn't get on base, he's a productive out. He's milked a lot of pitches, made the pitcher work...setting up his teammate.
