Atlanta Season 2

Post#1 » by Dr. Detfink » Fri Mar 16, 2018 1:34 pm

Only 3 episodes into this season, this show has already made razor sharp, comedic commentary on the digital music industry as it pertains to companies like Spotify, white privilege as it pertains to Southern gun laws that allow hand guns to be on person in the movie theatre, the ever familiar treatment of a Black individual carrying big bills into a theater, club, etc. Lastly a cameo of Michael Vick.

You gotta love the fact, this show is produced by the same company whose news media never stops hitting below the belt any time a story on minorities breaks.

All bow to the genius of Glover who told a disappointing story about his comedy writing gig on 30 Rock. Basically Tina Fey would not have hired him if not for the fact, 30 Rock gets additional funding if she hired a Black person on her writing team. At least, she was honest with him.

I'll have to check this show out again when I have a chance. I tried a few episodes of the first season on a long flight and I couldn't get into it
Felt like it was a little too deliberate.

First season was really great.

Surprisingly, this show kind of a went under the radar for me. Didn't hear anything about it when it aired, just randomly saw a good review and decided to give it a try..

Gonna wait for 2nd season to finish before I watch.

Please do yourself a favor and watch through Season 1. It's smart, comedic writing. My favorite episode of Season 1 is the commercials of car ads, 60 minutes previews but with Black actors as the leads...and it's hilarious.

Essentially much of Glover's writing is from the perspective, "If you lived in a world where someone else's race takes dominance, you would think you're a martian. Smart commentary on racism, social mobility in America which anyone can empathize w/o patronizing the audience.

yeah it stinks but donald glover was on the brink of greatness, he was doing a lot in the comedy world, so it wasn't really an undeserving hand out. he was part of a great sketch team along with dc pierson and dominic dierkes called derrick comedy that was performing sold out shows around ny(all of them are successful)

and because glover has ties to the ucb, during the writers strike he thought it'd be awesome to perform live shows there

LOL Y U MAD THO?

Paper Boi is in a Broadway stage, Lobby Hero play with Michael Cera and Chris Evans. See it! It's great.

Anyone catch the Barbershop episode? OMG I didn't think it was possible to make a simple hair cut so hysterical. There were more laughs in that one episode than both Barbershop films.

I think "Earn" battling depression is a nice subtle plot point to this season.

Last season, he is treated badly for being Black and poor. This season, he's treated badly for being Black and yet, he's successful.

The depression definitely appears front and center when Vanessa wants to go out with her friends who are doing an Octoberfest themed party. Vanessa definitely wants to expand her palette. She learned to speak/understand German and try new things. Earn looks tired, frustrated, and unavailable. The episode ends in a blow out between a man and woman that EVERYONE regardless of race and culture has experienced on some level before.

It's funny, it's human...I'll be honest, I was NOT a fan of Community. I love FX's Atlanta.

Mighta been the best episode yet. The fact that at the end you could see Paperboi was really conflicted and a little sad about losing his barber. That’s such a hood nuance. Cuz despite all the drama, he’d give you the best haircut and you’d really consider getting another cut from him. I was rolling the entire episode.

Come inspire the kids Paperboi!
The whole lumber thing...
Wtf?! I’m cracking up just writing this thinking about it.
