Re: Draft Thread 11-switching up board daily edition
For Bridges, the analysis varies just as much.
Most of the uncertainty centers around where Bridges fits in at the NBA level — does he play the three or four? — while there is definite agreement about his athletic ability.
“He's a small forward that can slide over and play power forward,” an Eastern Conference scout said. “He can post up, and he's strong. That's what a lot of people have forgotten. He's athletic enough to guard the small forward.”
“He's athletic. He has some bounce to him, but what position does he play?” a Western Conference executive said. “Some people say he's a small forward, some say he's a power forward. He's gotta be able to put it on the deck more. But he's a great kid, a terrific kid. That's a big part of it.
“A kid like that will work, he'll succeed. You don't know to what level, but he's a lottery pick. He'll be in our league a long time. He's a great kid.”
One scout thinks he’s a top-five talent, ranking him right behind DeAndre Ayton of Arizona, Duke’s Marvin Bagley III and Luka Doncic from Slovenia.
“I have him up high,” the scout said. “Some of the other guys, you can have them. I have him ahead of Jaren Jackson. Ayton, Bagley, Doncic, Bridges at four. I know what he has.”

Dunc'd On Podcast compared MPJr to Rudy Gay. That's another solid comparison, IMO.

I still have no idea what the hype about Jaren Jackson is. Like I said months ago, I'll take Miles before him any day

I want to discuss how the Knicks can trade up with the Magic and still somehow trade back with the Clippers.
And still get Donic.
Paging Besart.

On the one hand, I do - he's tall, long, can switch, good defensive rotations, can hit open jumpers, athletic, and has shown a decent ability to put the ball on the floor from the perimeter in drives to the hoop (but I HIGHLY doubt he uses this in the NBA).
On the flip side, I don't - poor rebounder, incredibly foul prone (and bites on fakes), raw, and misses contested jumpers (probably because of his form).
With him, I get the upside. But, what are the chances he actually reaches it? I still see an OKC Ibaka level player with him, which is a good player but top 4? I guess if a team has confidence in their ability to mold him and get the most out of him, then yeah, swing for the fences.

This is why I'm not concerned at all about Miles handles. I've read here he has 'shacky' handles and I don't see it. He can drive and pull up with ease.

There's no covering up for poor defense with another player, professional teams will find the weak link and exploit it repeatedly, especially the better teams come playoff time. Franks wingspan isn't good enough to cover for a back court mate who can't keep his man in front of him, KP sagging into the paint covering for Kanter who offers no rim protection gives up open 3s.
This is why whoever the pick is has to play defense enough that they aren't a liability. The player who has the most skilled demonstrated ability on both sides of the court has my attention, not one who 'could be' only if they tried....but they don't. Curry is an outlier with generational talent who is surrounded by two way players in a great scheme that cover for his limitations.
That being said the Knicks need to hit on this one big time.

Re: Draft Thread 11-switching up board daily edition
The reason why scouts are high on Jaren Jackson is the fact, you can't teach height. You either have it or you don't. This is why all men are not created equal.
The second thing, offensive skill is a little harder to have than defensive skill.
To me, Mo Bamba is a second round pick in a deeper draft. That's the only guy I can't see being a top 10 or even 20 pick. He's got a nice upside but reminds me a little of how the OKC Thunder thought Ibaka deserved a contract over Rich Harden.

Agreed. I'll use this opportunity to raise a point about a player's main role, his "skills", where he's going to be drafted, and the realisticness of some of the scouting/expectations of the player, both among scouts and on here.
In general, I get going over every attribute a player has and being really critical of it. In a vacuum, every single player in the draft could be drafted anywhere from 1-60. That said, the players are going to fall into tiers. 1-4. 4-8, 9-15. etc etc. The players 1-4 are the stars/potential stars. It's not like star players can't be found after that, but we all know the chances go down with each pick. Anyway, let's take a SF like a Bridges (either one). If they were slated to go top 4, criticisms of handle, are their drives only straight line, are they awesome on curls etc - might be founded. Meaning, in that slot, a team is looking for a franchise player. Almost immediately after that, or certainly down in the 7-9 area, sure, if that franchise guy is there, take him. But more than likely it's a role player, or a guy who plays his position. I get how you want a player who can switch all over the place on defense or has guard skills at SF, but I always thought that SF's sort of came in two flavors - ones that were like big guards (Spreewell?) or bigger ones almost getting towards PF's - Melo/Bernard. Just for the sake of the broad type. Of course there are all different kinds. Anyway, both Bridges seem to check the boxes for what a SF can do. Neither may be the most "guard like" SF, but in terms of having solid SF skills handling the ball, or shooting, or rebounding or defending their position and like, one other position, they seem fine.
Both seem, in different sort of ways, like up model Wilson Chandler, but with way more fire and desire (Clyde voice), which makes for a pretty good SF. Not a franchise guy, but come one, chances of that player being around at 8 are fairly slim.

I think you can ride with a "not so good" defensive player if that player is your team's offensive superstar. Other than that, it seems like a dumb approach to team building to not seek out players who are good and flexible in their defense.
