How much do Knicks fans expect the team to try to win rings?
This KP trade makes it appear that the team management will pull out all stops to try to build a championship team.
The general perception of Knicks fans is that they're very knowledgeable and are almost as much fans of basketball as they are Knicks fans.
They've support the team very well through these lean years and MSG is still one of the biggest stages, if not the biggest one in the NBA, when future HoF players come to play on visiting teams.
Legendary performances by superstars in visiting teams is a thing that you don't have with other arenas. That is, those games are remembered by Knicks and other NBA fans for years after the fact. You don't have that kind of dynamic at any other arena, not even the Boston Garden.
So it's always seemed like Knicks fans would always attend the games, even if the team playing good baseball was the visiting team. That isn't to say they didn't mind that the Knicks haven't been competitive with the top teams in a long time. But it seems the team is more desperate than it has been in the past, if this trade is any indication.
Just for comparison, the Warriors fans also supported the team well during the long drought when they struggled just to get into the playoffs for a decade at a time. They similarly bought tickets to see great players on other teams. The fact that they came out year after year was proof that they didn't demand the team field a contender or else.
The current success of the team was more serendipity. Most of the homegrown stars were nice picks but nobody imagined they'd all turn into all-NBA level players, perennial all-stars and MVP-level players at the time they were drafted. Maybe after such long periods of frustration, Warriors fans knew better than to have high expectations.
The Knicks ownership and management seem to be putting all their chips on signing two big free agents, and possibly getting a top 2 pick in the next draft. Or maybe they will yet be players in the AD sweepstakes.
Do they have any reason to fear that if they don't turn around the franchise, attendance at MSG and local TV ratings would fall off a cliff? Or are they just acting as if Knicks fans would abandon the franchise in droves if they didn't make these kinds of big moves?
If the Knicks incrementally improved the team, developing players like Knox and Trier, re-signing KP and adding talent through the draft and signing some free agent but not necessarily the top FAs, they may be able to field a playoffs team in a couple of years.
But would such a course be acceptable or would Knicks fans dismiss such tread-milling? Is it championship or bust for Knicks fans or is it just the Knicks organization acting as if it is?

I'm guessing if the Mavs get a top-5 pick this year, the Knicks get it and that nullifies the second 1st.
If the Hawks get the Mavs pick the Knicks get 2021 and 2023.

Re: KP Trade Discussion Thread (Pt.2)
Has there been tweets confirming the 2 -1st rounders and which ones they'll be?
If its the 2019 for top 5 + 2021 I love this deal, if its 2021+ 2023 I hate this.

Zion/Culver/Frank/DSJ/Mitch/Dot/Knox/Trier and two max spots. Certainly would be interesting lol

Re: KP Trade Discussion Thread (Pt.2)
Entire trade boils down to the protections on the 1st rounders and which max cats we get
Don’t forget during the 2010 free agency spree we were left at the alter when we had room for max cats .
The trade is a referendum on whether or not players like fizdale & whether or not 2 of them want to play with DSJ.

that would be ideal but could it be something in regards to KP's health and a number of games played next year?
Like if KP plays less than 60 games next year we don't get the 2nd pick.
