Knicks: What happened?
So, this potentially could be the most stupid thread ever, but for me it still is a very intriguing question.
I followed the NBA quite closely in the 90's, lost interest a bit but regained interest and follow it very closely since 6-7 years now.
I remember playing this computer game (somewhere periode 1989-1993) on my Commodore 64, this NBA basketball game, with the 8 best teams of the NBA of that moment. Featuring Boston, Detroit, New York and Chicago in the East. With Patrick Ewing as a monster center for the Knicks.
With Jordan, Johnson, Bird & McHale and I. Thomas. And Ewing.
So, basically the Knicks were a top team at that time.
But what the h*ll happened after that? Why have the New York Knicks been so bad or mediocre since, like, the end of the eighties/beginning of the 90's period?
New York is one of the greatest, most important cities in the world. The Knicks have (or had?) a great attraction for a lot of people (players and fans).
How is it possible that the Knicks have been this irrelevant for the last two decades?
What exactly happened here? Stupid front office moves, bad coaching, bad coaches, injuries to well-payed players...?
I'm just confused.
I know this is the Knicks forum so there's probably a lot of tense, emotional, maybe even non-realistic or irrational talk on this forum regarding your favorite team, but for me, I would like to know what exactly made the Knicks what they have been for 20 years.
So I'm more interested in facts and events (which, I know, could still be drenched in personal opinions about those events or facts, but still...), than I am in just emotionally-laden opinions like "the Knicks are a dumpster fire" or things like that.
So...anyone?

See, we had a stealth GM named Carl. Carl promised us riches beyond our wildest dreams. He told us to be patient and get girlfriends.

Id like the mods to check this ""ballboys"" IP while they're at it. For curiosity sake.

Lol. Check for what?
I am a bit surprised by the reactions. Click bait, IP check...
Thought I was asking a question a lot of basketball fans wanted to ask (or have already asked).
Seriously astonished why a team with a reputation like the Knicks haven't been able to put it all together for so long.
Kinda was hoping for reactions telling me more about (failed) decisions, trades that went wrong, stars with injuries. Like I said in my OP, I haven't followed the NBA between roughly 1997-2011 so I certainly don't know al the details.
But hey, maybe the reactions tell me more about the state of the modern day Knicks fan who has been getting used to so much losing, frustration and sourness.
If you really think this is a click bait thread, close it. I don't really care. Thought I was being serious and honest with my questions, but maybe these questions aren't supposed to be asked and/or are too painful to ask?
By the way: seriously had to Google what IBTL means.

OP must’ve lived in a cave for the past 20 years.
Our downfall has been well documented. There’s nothing taboo about it.

Yes, I haven't followed the NBA very close for a long time.
How about the downfall you're speaking of? What caused this downfall?
Draft choices, bad luck with the drafts, bad management, all of it?
I mean, everybody in the world knows the Knicks. One of the most famous arena's in the world. But why haven't the best basketball players played here? Why have the Knicks not been able to attract the best free agents?

Yeah,I am with the OP, what did happen after the 1997 season? How come there is this man named Lebron James headlining the NBA now? Did Michael Jordan have a career ending injury? Or did the Bulls force him to retire?
