What should be prioritized for development of the young players?

Post#1 » by KnickFan33 » Thu Feb 7, 2019 11:18 pm

Perhaps it doesn't need it's own thread, but only a few players will be sticking around for next season. What 3 things do you think should be prioritized for their development?

Knox
1. Keeping focus
2. Defense
3. Shot selection

Robinson
1. Extending offensive range
2. Setting solid screens
3. Keeping out of foul trouble

Ntilikina
1. Jumpshot
2. Jumpshot
3. Jumpshot

Dotson
1. Consistency
2. ?
3. ?

Smith Jr. (Too early for me to say)
1. Pace management?
2.
3.

Trier
1. Learn to play off the ball
2. Facilitating an offense
3. Defense

- Robinson just needs to learn how to play basketball and keep working on his frame. He's making an impact just getting bye with athleticism. Also learn how to use your damn hands, he struggles with bounce entry passes. Everyone wants him to be a Capela type, well it took him three years to become Capela.

- Knox needs to work on his conditioning, that can be address by becoming a gym rat in the offseason. He picks his spots well at times when attacking, but he needs to really work on his motor. Scoring could come so effortless to him, he just needs to keep his focus for more than a quarter.

- Dennis Smith needs to learn how to be a point guard and control the pace of the game. He's great attacking, in transition and drive and kicks, but overall parts of his game are lacking when it comes to running the team and maintaining the tempo. Also he can really stand to improve his jumper.

- Frank, your days as a future PG are now absolutely over. Work on your damn shot and take lessons from Dennis on how to attack and be aggressive. His ability to be a swiss army knife for this team can be utilized but he needs to stop being a detriment on offense. Your ability to see passing lanes are worth nothing if defenders sag off of you and you telegraph passes.

- Dotson it's weird because you can see him make an impact when he gets minutes, but I just don't see his game really evolving much more. He's more or less what he is, a decent player off the bench. He's a good swingman off the bench, he could improve on his conditioning and jumper more going forward.

- Trier has the makings of a potential sixth man of the year award type guy, he's a microwave off the bench. He does a great job of attacking the rim and drawing fouls, I actually wish both he and Frank would work Smith. They could all stand to learn from each other.

This. We should look to retain Trier and one other player (preferably Mitch) if we are trading all of our picks.

Had always thought all must go to make a deal work salary wise so until otherwise shown, assuming they all go.

Knox
1. Defense
2. Intensity
3. Passing while driving

I actually like his shot selection. Generally takes good shots and has good form. He's just a very erratic shooter and should improve with reps.

Robinson
1. Limiting fouls
2. Physical conditioning
3. Free throws

I don't want to see him doing any long range shooting or creating this year. I'm actually very impressed with his basketball IQ and how he learns. I think he just needs to fix his conditioning and jump less.

Ntilikina
1. Set or one dribble 3 point shooting
2. Handle
3. Finishing

He can be a good glue player with a shot and be a Mike Conley-esque player with a shot and a handle.

Dotson
1. Perimeter defense
2. Mid range shot
3. Handle

All young guys need consistency. I think with better defense, he would be a long time starter.

Smith Jr.
1. Drawing fouls(more moves with the dribble)
2. Perimeter defense
3. Long range shot

Good finisher and decent passer. His defense and shooting has improved but needs to improve more. Biggest issue is he doesn't vary his speeds and dribble, thus not drawing enough fouls.

Trier
1. Learn to play off the ball
2. Passing while driving
3. Perimeter defense

I agree, off ball movement and positioning are most important for him to become a very good SG.

Just shoot it. Take it 1:1 at all times.

Nothing else matters.

Knox - shot selection, not leaving your man on D, weightlifting and stamina

Mitch - free throws, not falling for pump fakes, no bad fouls, stamina, developing a post game

Trier - passing, playmaking, unselfishness

Frank - shooting, playmaking, no bad fouls, aggressiveness, showing some desire to be in the nba

DSJ - shooting, reducing turnovers, free throws, defense

Dotson - idc, not a big fan

Sacrificing your game for betterment of the team. Don't worry, they won't do that but everyone knows this is how a champion begins.

Hard to prioritize when we're playing positionless and systemless basketball.

The Nets have a system and they are competitive every night. Well, maybe they have more talent.

Lance Thomas and his 2019/2020 expiring can go that way also.

Trier and Mitchell make a combined 5 million. We can work around that. Just need to convince KD to take a little less for us to keep his friend Trier. Then we make it up to him behind the scenes.
