I kept on saying that our "crowded" outfield is not as crowded as the yanks want you to believe. Garner is gone after this year. Ellsbury is gone one way or another. Hicks is going to be a free agent (this year or next?). Stanton is DH more and more as he approaches 30s.

Finally something to distract me from the abysmal Knicks.

Anyone think we sign Machado in a week or so?

They are playing the long game with Machado. They will sign him to a 1 year deal when all is said and done.

The entire league is playing that same game.

Yankees aren't gonna overpay if the rest of the league aren't. They ain't out of either until both sign with a team.

Very nice deal for the Yankees buying out his arb years and getting a FA option year, though this further puts a nail in the coffin of a Machado/Harper ninja move.

it was a good deal for both sides. If he continues to perform like he did last season, he probably could have gotten 50-60 millions through arbitration. But now he traded in 40m guaranteed money with no worries about injuries or performance.

I'm not an expert on baseball contracts or the collective bargain agreement, but I think they seriously need to change the current structure where a player has to go through 6 years of service time before hitting free agent. It sucks for someone like Hicks when you dont hit free agency until 30 or 31. Teams dont want to give big contracts out any more because when it is hard to justify giving someone a 6-10 years contract starting at age 30. If an all time great like A-Rod cant live up to a 10 year contract than it probably doesnt make sense to give anyone a 10 year contract in their 30s.

They did a segment on Sportscenter where they said Team Owners genuinely prefer younger players becoming Free Agents sooner in their careers and would much rather hand out these big contracts to these guys when they're 23-24, basically getting better value from these contracts. Getting rid of the arbitration process and making players become free agents sooner would fix up the market. Right now, Team Owners are reluctant to hand out 10 year deals to guys who are 28-29. They would rather hand 10 year deals to guys who are 22-24.

Apparently Team Owners don't want to hand big deals to guys who are 26, either

If Severino has gotten his house in order and Paxton pitches like he's shown the ability to, this is going to be a REALLY fun summer to watch when those two are rolling.

I'm not just worried about CC finishing the year, I worry that he will survive the year. He's recovering from coronary artery bypass surgery that required a stent, something that was described as rare for a 38 year old man. With his weight and alcohol history, he's got health challenges ahead. I like him a lot as a player and he seems like a good guy, so I seriously hope he takes care of his health even more than I hope he pitches well.

I feel like it's been an underwhelming off-season for the Yankees -- and not just because they failed to pursue Harper and Machado (which is absolutely pathetic in itself). For one, I'm skeptical of the Paxton trade. Was transplanting another #2/#3-type starter from a cavernous AL West ballpark to Yankee Stadium really the smartest move? I'd have rather signed Keuchel or Corbin and just kept Sheffield or used him in a future deal. Not wild about the Britton signing either. He looked meh in his return last year -- plus I'm not sure a groundball pitcher is the best fit considering the left side of the infield will be patrolled by a washed Tulowitzki and unsteady Andujar. The team also heads into another year with big question-marks at 1b. Greg Bird is awful, Yankee BS press clippings notwithstanding, and Voit hardly has much of a track record. The team should be competitive; but considering the organization hasn't won a World Series in a decade nor an AL East title since 2012, they should have had a way more aggressive posture over the winter. I mean, come on, Boston has lapped the Yankees the past five years. George would not have sat idle the way cheapskate Hal has.
