I'm so torn on watching the show end vs the books. If the next book isn't out relatively soon...I might have to watch the show.

These guys are lost. Still scheming and playing how to train your dragon. Stannis would never had done that

May as well. You'll eventually get spoiled since its so popular. It's inevitable. Especially considering it'll still be a couple years for next book, and (if the series ever gets done) it'll be decades for book 7, 8, 9

Waiting for the books to come out is like waiting for the Knicks to win a championship. You might as well watch the show.

Just 2 books left. I know it'll get spoiled eventually but...I kinda like the chalkenge it would be to avoid it. Better than the Tide Pod challenge.

I've been a reader since the 90s, and I did't really get into the show until a couple of years ago. It differs a bit from the books, and not necessarily in good ways (although it is great). You can definitely watch the show and still read the books, especially if you're up to date on the books. Hell, I've re-read the whole series of books every time a new book has come out.

Spoiler:
Nah she's stringing him along. Needs to make it seem like she's giving in when really she's just working to use him as cover for the next child she has. Can't be the verified brother **** queen, so she's gonna pretend he impregnated her. She just needs him to win first because otherwise it'll seem weird when she marries him.

I always catch crap for complaining, because the show is still pretty damned good but even last night the fall off was clear and I think it's just priorities of the show runners.

Spoiler:
How much budget did they waste to give us the end of the Neverending Story in Jon Snow form?
Image

Jealous Dragons? :nonono: But this does seem to set us up for the GoT version of a Top Gun dog fight.

Anyway, I think there were some good payoffs and then some rushed ones. Theon saving Yara was way too simple, but his conversation with Yara afterward was GREAT and set us up for two developments (Euron vs Yara for the Ironborn rule and Theon returning to Winterfell). They managed to absolutely perfectly nail the relationship between Arya and the Hound within a couple of lines but then the Gendry interaction just didn't have the same chemistry that the actors had when they were younger imho. Tormund, Beric and Edd were perfectly written and the reminder of the threat was great; but that was some ole plot convenient off screen horse finding too.

My thing is, why rush all of this though? I feel like there's enough that they could fill in to make two more seasons that hit all of our wants without having to sacrifice some of these payoffs. Sansa and Tyrion, Arya and Gendry, Jon and everybody...all of those felt shorter than they could have been or just had some impact sapped from them.

But that's kinda nitpicking to be honest, because it's just me wanting more. All of those payoffs felt fairly on point for the characters and how they've developed and grown. The reveal in front of Ned's statue ("next time we see each other" promise from Ned pays off) was great and Sam finding out about his father and brother was the best scene of the night imho. Dany learning how to interact with the North is going to be interesting and it's the aspect of the show I like the most. That said, how Ned Stark raised all his sons to have zero understanding of the human dynamics aspect of ruling is frustrating. Sansa is Catelyn making all of the right observations to a king of the North who just doesn't listen. I fully get the Sansa and Arya skepticism about Dany and I'm looking forward to more interactions. Add all of the parallels to episode one of the entire series and this was full of some great payoffs; I mean, just the eye contact between Jaime and Bran was striking (and I really hope they don't rush the next time Jaime speaks with Brienne).

And a last couple of nitpicks:
- It feels like they're forcing some dialogue to get in big money lines, "Dragons eat whatever they want" type of ish. It hits sometimes, but it's corny.

- The Bronn subplot ought to go exactly how we expect because his character development seemed complete already...so any twist in this joint will feel like a regression. It could be the Arya/Sansa beef from last season, obvious and forced.

- Dragonglass weapons look kinda lame fam

But anyway, I still really liked it. It just feels a lot like it's gonna peak around last season level of good rather than those earlier seasons that stuck close to the bucks and focused on human interaction and Sun Tzu level power games. The North might help bring it back, but with the limited time...I think we're gonna get more cheap solutions than big payoffs tbh.

The books made it more clear how often she gets men to do her bidding with her body. Having to marry Euron to legitimize her kid definitely fits here.

Yes I've read the books several times. Started in 1999. Read the first and 2nd back to back. Then the 3rd. Then read them all again for the 4th and 5th books.

The show stayed pretty loyal to the books for a bit. Then a few big story lines got gutted and merged with other characters. I get why. The series would be so much longer to fit it all in. I would have loved it but...I read the books. A lot of new fans haven't.

I would be happy with a release of the next book in 2019. I would wait to read that before watching again. George isn't getting any younger either. I've waited 20 years to fiinish reading this story. Watching the series end before the books is just not right to me. I think I'm gonna try and wait it out honestly.

I'm going to watch the end, but for me the show is more just cool seeing places and people come to life than anything. It's all just a reference back to the books.
