Kerr’s answer here is as cowardly and shameful as it gets.

This is the tack that Trump takes when defending Russia.

Wow , Kerr really should have just had the moderators pull the mic from that person like Harden did to the cnn reporter, he would have looked a lot better than comparing individual lunatics to lunatic governments.

Personally I agree with Kerr. The US has lost the moral high ground on global humanitarian concerns because of the atrocities we allow to continue in our own country

I'm not sure how mass shootings, while extremely tragic and something we have not been aggressive enough about IMO, compare to concentration camps and harvesting organs from political prisoners.

The mass shootings don’t compare, but the literal child concentration camps at the border do, or the half a million dead in Middle East wars or the funded genocide of Palestinian people etc. nobody could possibly believe the US govt. wouldn’t bomb the Uyghur Muslims themselves if they had some oil

I didn’t even mention the largest prison population in the world fueled by private prison industry that has targeted and mass incarcerated black people or the police brutality which amount to modern day lynchings of unarmed black people

Trump and his cult are out in full force calling Kerr and Popovich hypocrites because they won’t take a stand and lose their job. Well guess who did exactly that? Kaepernick. And they despise him for doing it

To me Kerr is saying nobody is going to take us seriously unless we clean up our own house

I dunno man, I still watch the NBA. And this is probably one of the most talented, balanced, competitive era coming up. And I enjoy the hell out of it.

The only reason this has recently have come up to my attention was because my right wing cousins texted me and were just waiting for a moment like this so he can say "see! liberals are such pu$$ies and hypocrites!".

Either way, after tip off, the entertainment is still there. I'm really not that concerned with celebrities/athletes political views. I definitely never had a desire to compare them to actual politicians

Same crap with the kneeling. Dorks wanted to get upset and not watch the games lol. And tried saying the NFL wasn't as entertaining.

Kerr's statement was dumb and forced.

But he and others are not obligated to speak on human rights worldwide now, imo.

If I was an NBA player, I might say something to support my people, but does that make me obligated to speak on behalf of everyone who is going through fcked up **** around the world?

Lot of people are getting upset because these players were wearing "I Can't Breathe" shirts but are not sticking up for issues outside the US.

In other words, if moral high ground were the minimum requirement to point out blatant faults in others, we’d have a society with pretty much no oversight. Strange arguments seem the norm now.

Among wealthy nations, the US has a larger income inequality* than nations with what Americans refer to as socialist policies.
Somehow the far right seems to have convinced you that unregulated capitalism distributes wealth, which is blatantly false.
The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer precisely because of the policies of the White House, which favor big business. Or do you actually believe in trickle down economics?

I believe in what I see with my own two eyes. Every state run by leftist policies is a hell-hole.

You need to get your eyes checked.
There are plenty of social-democrat leaning countries that are happier than the U.S.

Regarding Kerr, he certainly makes a valid point that the U.S. is not immune to criticism
I don't think he's really trying to equivocate, you have to read between the lines a little bit.
He clearly says that as an American he has the right to criticize both the US and China and that's really key.
If China wants to promote the NBA in their country they're going to have to learn to live with the criticism.
At some point certain players and coaches will speak out about their abuses, just as they have about those of the US.

It's important that people do continue to speak their minds.
To simply say the U.S. is no better is depressingly cynical.
If one still has any faith left in democracy despite the shambolic administration in office in the U.S., one should support the people of Hong Kong.

The reason Trump is in office is because people put ideology and party affiliation ahead of common sense. But then again, like I said before, he may be the one best suited to handling what the big picture of what China is trying to do than anyone.

Trump tapped into a working class demographic that has felt screwed over and left out by both parties. Lot's of these folk are located in the rust belt and coal country. They had a choice between someone who they believe they knew would not take them seriously (Hillary Clinton) and Trump, who said things they wanted to here during the campaign.

Even then, Hillary still beat him by 3 million or so votes but lost electorally. Bernie would've defeated Trump because he tapped into that same demographic that Trump did. Most polls reflected that back then but the DNC and the MSNBC made it virtually impossible for him to win then. He's still getting reamed by cable news this time around too.
