Knicks championship needs!

Post#1 » by Nbabrothers » Wed Jun 24, 2020 7:35 pm

I am beyond fed up with the Knicks not being a contender and I have been a fan since the 70’s (too young to remember their championship seasons.
Without naming players and basing it strictly off positions what is it the Knicks need to be considered a contender?
My analysis is as follows:
2 all stars
2 defensive minded players preferably at the guard and center positions.
2 three point Hawkeyes to keep the defense honest.
Role players consisting of rebounders, offense off the bench, high iq point guard(s).
Am I right on point with this analysis?

Also, what positions should the two all star be? I’m thinking center and point guard.

that's a whole lot of hypothetical.

i think there's a lot more to team building than these generalities. skills have to complement. so do personalities.

i would prefer everyone on the floor be capable and willing defenders who make good decisions with the ball. not everyone has to be a deadeye long-range shooter, but i agree you need more than one on the floor at a time.
RIP magnumt

welcome home, thibs.

We need exceptional talent!! Its very hard to get it. We cant choose positions.

After that, we need complementary pieces.

"You kidding me...Playoffs?...I just hope we can win a game."
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Its todays NBA, there are much less difference makers among bigs. In a fast research I count only 13 all star level players among Bigs against 29 all star among "small"/"medium" players.

All star level players 4-5 positions (13): GIannis, AD, Jokic, Embiid, Siakam, Adebayo, Gobert, Sabonis, Towns, Vuc, Blake, KP and Zion.

All star level players 1-3 positions (29): LeBron, Harden, Curry, Doncic, Leonard, Durant, PG13, CP3, Irving, Butler, Lillard, Beal, Wall, Klay, Ingram, Simmons, Tatum, Booker, Lowry, Donovan, Middleton, Westbrook, Kemba, Trae, Ja, Dlo, Spencer, Lavine, Jrue.

And I didnt include Fox, Jamal, Brogdon, Brown, Tobias, CJ Mccollum, Lonzo and DeRozan.

Thus, its more easy to get all star players in positions 1-3. Its not essential to have an all star in position 4-5. We can have our 2 best players in position 1-3 like the Clippers, Blazers, Rockets. etc.

I hear what you’re saying but I miss having a center like Ewing who in today’s game would have been shooting three pointers as well.
All in all I would prefer to have an all defensive team that holds opponents to 85-95 points. Knicks should be known for their defense like they used to be. It may sound crazy but I don’t want a fast breaking team like the Warriors. We would give up too many points. A defensive team would make up for any shortcomings in offense we may have.
Thibedou would make us a defensive team but he would be a win now coach hence trading for veterans and not developing our young talent and possibly trading away all of our draft picks in the process.

Would you be happy if we hired Thibedou and made some trades but kept our lottery picks protected? That would be a win win for us I think. We do need some veterans on the roster because the best teams have veterans that produce in one way shape or form.

1) We have to choose the tatics based on the talent available. We cant be picky. If we get 2-way stars we can be a defense team like the todays Clippers. If we draft a player like Lamello or trade for Booker, Dlo or Towns, It will be harder. Its maybe more smart to build a fast breaking team to take advantage of his skillset.

2) I am also afraid that Thibedou try to win now and push for bad trades to bring aged stars. He is not the coach of my choice.

3) Its very hard to find fast Centers with range, strength, durability and IQ to dominate in todays league. Its better to invest in other positions.

We need a lot! Currently...we have no direction...no HC...no idea who's gonna be on the roster...no high end talent...no continuity in anything beyond losing a lot.

Championship needs? 3-4 years of rebuilding and developing players. Stability from the top down for that entire time. Smart FA/trade deals...luck.
