Well just reading through this thread, most of the takes still put blame on KD one way or another ("he couldn't handle it" or "he would have come here if not for achilles/he is a beta follower to Kyrie". I think the question is why do Knicks fans believe that the idea of being the "Knicks savior" or whatever would appeal to KD? I understand why Knicks fans would want a superstar free agent to come there, and help them become a championship contender. But there seems to be this entitlement from a lot of Knicks fans (not all of course) that KD should have signed for the Knicks and he's a bitch, just because he ended up signing with the other team in NYC. I feel like if KD had signed with the Clippers for example, instead of the Nets, this really wouldn't be much of a conversation.Stannis wrote:MrDollarBills wrote:But just reading through this thread, it feels like you guys feel entitled to have someone, nevermind KD, to come to Manhattan and save this franchise. I don't get that part. No one is obligated to sign with any team, especially one with an owner as bad as James Dolan.
Not sure what board your lurking, but the consensus around here is pretty known. Unless the Knicks have a decent team or a star to build around, we don't expect a FA to sign here...
We definitely don't feel obligated that a FA is going to just sign here to "save us. Sure there are some posters that might think that, but they tend to called out a lot.

Haven't heard anything about Jimmy Butler... But as far as Kemba, it was obviously for the best for both parties. I didn't make sense for the Knicks to just sign 1 free agent with the lacking talent pool we have. I think most fans understand this.
I haven't seen any poster on this board call Kemba soft for that.

Kemba with RJ, Robinson, Knox, Morris (?) would’ve been a good foundation to a playoff team. There would’ve been no Randle, no Gibson, no Bullock signings.

KD and Kleiman admitted on the JJ podcast that KD wanted to go to NYC, but it wasn't about the Knicks, and going by Ian Begley's recent piece on this where he actually apologizes for the error in reporting that KD to Knicks could happen, it seems like a lot of people just assumed that he was going to the Knicks. There was Stephen A Smith (who is a clown but does have sources) claiming that he was told that KD/Kyrie were coming to NYC in FA, and he also assumed that it was to Knicks. So I feel like that is the source for a lot of the narrative.Stannis wrote:DarkXaero wrote:]Well just reading through this thread, most of the takes still put blame on KD one way or another ("he couldn't handle it" or "he would have come here if not for achilles/he is a beta follower to Kyrie". I wouldn't call it entitlement. But it was the worst kept secret in the NBA that KD was going to NY. There was hints everywhere.
Things obviously took a turn when Knicks weren't crazy about Kyrie and the achilles injury.
There were even rumors of a KD + Kawhi partnership in LAC or NYK.
Reaction would be the same if he followed another star to another team (e.g. Clippers).
And KD is fragile and a bitch. It's well known is super sensitive, can't take criticism, and makes burner accounts. What do you expect people to call him???

Actually we are having some good conversation, wondering what moves will be made by Sean Marks, how KD will look in our line up, what kind of system Steve Nash has in mind for Kyrie and KD, how much luxury tax is the owner willing to spend, etc. We're pretty excited.
I just noticed the conversation and asked yall a legitimate question about why Knick fans seem to think that star players should feel obligated to play for the Knicks under the current circumstances which are less than ideal? It seems like there is a sense of entitlement in that regard

KD was the best player on the Warriors. He didn’t chill to those championships. What he did to the Knicks was pretty crappy but dont disrespect one of the best players in NBA history. I’m sure if KD signed here you wouldn’t be posting this.
You need to stop disrespecting KD. You're holding him to expectations like he's Melo or Paul Pierce or Ray Allen. He ain't that level of player. For a while, people were proclaiming him as the CHIEF rival to Lebron, years of two transcendent forwards battling each other, leading teams and creating a strong rival. He has the ceiling of an all-time great. I'd argue that KD already got outpaced by Kawhi Leonard at this point. He is not even at pace to surpass Tim Duncan at this point, and while that may not be shameful (TD was an amazing player), KD was one of the few players who could have surpassed Tim Duncan career-wise. My reasons and rebuttals below.
1) Let's bring up King James. I didn't really respect what he did in Miami because when Lebron signed there, the expectation was "not one, not two, not three..." Just as Lebron acknowledged, that roster was STACKED, and when you're that stacked, the expectations are sky high. But you know when I did begin to respect his work? Game 7, dragging Kyrie and Love to a chip, the block. That was when I saw Lebron pushed to his peak as a player. He's facing a talented team, gets a few lucky breaks, fighting with a more flawed roster and more flawed sidekicks, down to elimination, a year after the Warriors essentially stomped on the Cavs. And he delivers. And Lebron felt more validated with this chip than any other. I don't agree with him, but after that chip, he called himself the "GOAT." To me, that signals a knowledge that he knew his Cleveland chip was worth more than his Miami rings. And I'd even put Dirk's chip up there, too. I think that's another level KD could have unlocked. He took a shortcut to get his ring.
2) With the Warriors, that series loss against Lebron was so close...on a razor's edge. Draymond got suspended, Warriors burned themselves out in the regular season, Warriors had already won a chip, Steph being arrogant, Barnes choking. KD essentially replaced Harrison Barnes, and once he did that, that was it. If Harrison Barnes had played at a regular level in the finals, the Cavs would have lost. You replace Barnes with KD? Hell you could have just replaced him with a 4th all star, maybe an above average starter, and that series would have been over. The Warriors did not need another superstar. Moreover, best player on that team doesn't mean jack. If Lebron joined Steph, Draymond and Klay and won a championship, he would have been the best player on that Warriors team, too. And it still would have been chilling. Lebron would have worked damn hard, that's for sure. But I wouldn't respect the ring. And that's one reason why Kawhi didn't decide to go to LAC with Davis and Lebron.
3) What KD's rings do is ensure that he'll never be mentioned with Barkley, Malone, Ewing, T-Mac etc. But he'll never be mentioned with Magic, Kobe, Michael, Lebron, Larry, etc. He bandwagoned the **** out of that team. Draymond Green punked him and said, "You can't win without us." KD evidently agreed. What would change things up is if he wins in New Jersey. I'm not impressed with KD beating Lebron in the finals. He basically got to conserve his strength for a year, rely on three other all stars and a championship level squad. If he had actually led a squad all year and won a ring and battled? Hell, remove Steph from the Warriors. Give him Green, give him Klay, give him some talent to replace Steph...It wouldn't have been as guaranteed, but I argue that KD still would have the talent to beat the Cavs, and I would have looked forward to seeing his play during that series. Some of the greatest moments in NBA history are born when players are under so much stress.
4) I'd like to think that I would not change my mind if KD came to the Knicks. Thibs came to the Knicks, and I didn't change my mind about him (lots of homer fans got pissed at me for that). Randle came and I didn't change my mind (less fans got pissed at me...although I think the fans that defend him are undermining their credibility). THJ came and I didn't change my mind. But even if I did, I'd be wrong. The truth is the truth. KD's championships with the Warriors were less competitive than if he had won one with OKC, or if he had joined the Knicks and won one. KD has the talent to lead a basketball team to a championship, in the same way Lebron did with Cleveland, in the same way that Kawhi did, in the same way Dirk did. He decided not to. He essentially chilled. Let's see if he re-writes that story with the New Jersey Nets.
5) There was actually one moment that could have rewrote his Warriors legacy, and that was this recent Finals loss against the Raptors. If KD had come back and led the Warriors to victory, then I'd agree with everything you're saying. In that case, the team NEEDED him to perform. When he was on Golden State most of the time, KD could have coasted, took only 5 shots a game, played defense, spaced the floor, blocked shots, and they would have still won most of the games. It was only against the Raptors last finals, when Klay got hurt and the role players got old, that KD was in this position where the Warriors NEEDED him at 100% every single game. If KD choked once, automatic loss. It's a shame that he got hurt.

Yeah I stopped reading when you said Paul Pierce, Melo and Ray Allen have had better careers than KD. If that’s your NBA knowledge than there is no point in continuing with this conversation. None of those players were ever considered at worst the second best player in the league at the time. But nice try.
You're holding him to expectations like he's Melo or Paul Pierce or Ray Allen.
